I want to buy a Joby Gorilla grip tripod for my camera, whilst not essential, it's £40 that I shouldn't be spending.

Thus, it's time for my penny jar!

I know there is more than £40 in there.

Anyway, it's one of those water containers you get at water dispensers in the office. The big plastic jug things.

What is my best option? Ideally I would like to count it my self, sense of achievement haha.

But when it comes to buying the tripod, am I better going to the bank or the shop with this tonne of coin?

One or the other will be annoyed. And no, I'm not using one of those penny counting machines that take a % to give you notes. It's a rip off.
 
get some bags from your bank and count it out and then take it in, most banks will only take a set amount at a time though. so be warned you cant just rock up with all of them.
 
HSBC do the penny counting machines and pays it straight into your account, and don't take a % AFAIK.

Other banks may do it too

I'm with RBS... An old branch that was bought over by Santander.

Do the coin machines in Tesco take a cut?

TBH if I had that many coins I would definitely just pop it all in one of those machines instead of wasting time counting it up.

Apparently some banks have similar machines that will not charge you. Might be worth checking with you bank.

Your call lol. If I had 20 litres of pennies, no way in hell I'd be counting them myself!

As others have said, if you can find a bank branch with a zero (or very low) commission counting machine, that would seem to be the best solution.
 
Also, I need to go through the coins anyway as there are Indian rupee's, Euro's... And a few random ones haha.

Called the bank, they will provide bags, won't count it though... Which is odd... Surely I could just lie?

When you bring in the filled bags, they'll weigh them to make sure they're the correct value (and adjust the total if not).

Each coin has a certain weight, they put the bag on the weighing machine to see if the combined weight is equal to what the value should be in each bag.

Like the rest, I count and bag when I get to a couple of hundred squid.

It's like collecting football cards - have I got enough 20p coins this time?! Oooh unlucky... but I do have enough 10p and 50p coins for a full bag! Woo yay!

5p bags are my nemesis, and 1p and 2p bags are massively underwhelming - plus just take up space. Rubbish.
 
Why don't you just weigh the coins yourself?

Just sift out the larger coins (£2, £1, 50p, 20p) and I'm sure you'll get £40 in no time! Once you've got the amount you're after then put it all back and keep it when you need something else!

This! It's fun haha. I like the idea of counting it all! Odd.
 
I use the coin machine in my local Tesco as the 8% goes to charity. I wouldn't use one where the cut went to a private firm.
