hi,

im sure this is a very easy/stupid :D question but i was wondering...

If i get a core2duo laptop now... could i just swap out the processor for a penryn at a later date? or are the motherboards going to be different for each?

Is there a link somewhere that shows which cpu's use the same slots. I've got a couple of older desktop cpu's lying around that I wouldn't mind swapping out with other machines ive got too.

Cheers.

The mainboards need to be compatible I believe the new chassis are starting to come through from the oem's but I doubt the majority of C2D notebooks will be upgradable.

99% of modern Intel laptops use socket 479 which is socket 478 with a different pin layout. However, you cannot put a desktop CPU into a laptop - regardless of likely chipset/pin incompatibility, the heat that a desktop CPU generates would be poorly managed by a laptop cooling system.

If you wanted to upgrade your laptop from a current mobile Core 2 you will need a mobile penryn that works in the Intel 965 chipset. I don't know if Intel are launching a new laptop chipset for Penryn.

Sorry... i think what I said wasn't very clear or has been misunderstood... either that or ive misunderstood some of the replies :)

Yes i would be planning on buying the penryn for the laptop... so yes it would be the mobile penryn. I just wondered if it would fit in the macbooks core2duo slot (as i am going to be buying a macbook in the next few weeks but expect the penryns to be in the macbooks by the summer).

My desptop cpu's was a side question. nothing to do with the laptop.

Cheers.
