Pentax K100D and some questions

Just looking at this camera on the web, most places seem to stock it with a lens for under 300 pounds. Is it any good? Seems a little cheap compared to all the other DSLRs

I have been using an S5600 for the past year and a half, which I am pleased with but really want to move up to DSLRs.

Anyone got any advice? Anything else around that price mark (second hand considered).

Also, I have a load of screw mount lenses (zoom, wide angle, fixed etc etc) from my ancient film SLR. Could these be made to fit to a modern DSLR somehow?

Lastly, how is the exposure set on most DSLRs? Buttons on the body or a dial on the lens?

Cheers!

do you know what mount (M42 etc)?

these days it's mostly dials/wheels on the body

Hey mate, thanks for the help.

I was wondering about the lens fitting myself, as there is nothing on the boxes or lenses to specify what mount other than 'screw fit'. Having done some googling around however I have seen a couple of references to them being M42. Is there a way for me to check (measuring things etc)?

Also, these lenses are fully manual. They screw on and you do the focus / zoom / aperture yourself (ie, there is no way for the camera to talk to the lens). I don't mind this but will the new bodys work with them?

Cheers!

Edit:

Hmm, little more Googling seems to suggest that they ARE M42 (even found a picture of a 350D with one mounted on :)).

Hey,
i just bought a Pentax K100D the other week. so far I love it :)

Pentax say that any pentax lense ever made ( not threaded screw type though ) will fit.

when i was looking for DSLR's around this price range they all seemed quite similar in spec and features. the only reason why i went to pentax was because the guy next door has a pentax DSLR and tons of lenses which i can borrow and use.

the kit lense is *okay*and will get you off the ground. I ahve just ordered a tamron 90mm macro for mine and will piost pics when i get it :)

the exposure is set with your right thumb on a wheel dial ( a bit like the wheel on a mouse ? ), in Tv mode you can set the exposure / shutter speed, or in B ( bulb mode ) the shutter will stay open as long as you hold the trigger button down.

There has also been a firmware update for the camera too. apparently it allows the use of 4GB cards :)

the K100 & D40 (~£270 incl. cashback) are 6Mp, most of the others current entry levels (Canon 400D, Nikon 40DX, Olympus, E-400, Sony A100) are ~ 10Mp but nearer £400.

I'm surprised that they required a firmware update for that.

Hey,

Thanks for the responses :) I might go into Jessops and have a play with the D40 and K100D to see which I like best.

R B CUSTOMS: What does the body feel like to use? My current camera (Fuji S5600 feels almost like a toy).

Would it be possible to get an adapter to fit my M42 lenses onto the Pentax body? I took some great photos with those lenses so it would be a shame to replace them for the sake of an incompatible fixture :(

Hi Ameoba. I shoot using Pentax K100D, my first DSLR. Quite comfortable to use.

However the K100D has been discontinued by Pentax, and will be replaced by the K100D Super (still 6mp, but dust removal and support for SDM supersonic motor lenses. Not that there are any pentax SDM lenses yet!)

an M42 to Pentax K mount adaptor should be able to be bought from the net.

Incidently I went from a S5600 to a K100D :)

:) Glad to hear the Pentax is a nice camera. Is there any ETA of when the K100D Super will hit shops? I seem to have found a stockist in the US, but can't see how they would have it actually in stock when nobody else does (they don't say it's not in stock though if you get me).

I'm reluctant to post a link, even though OcUK don't sell Pentax cameras (I guess they could always say by encouraging you to buy Pentax that was one less potential Canon sale for them). But the K100D Super is currently in stock -- according to their website -- with the kit lense for £379 at a reputable online retailer.
