Pentium/AMD

I have a Pentium 4 Processor 3EGHz (supporting Hyper-Threading Technology) 1MB and L2-Cache 800MHz socket 478.
My question is I want to upgrade my system to AMD, can you recommend any AMD that runs at the same speed as Intel. I have checked on the OcUK site for all the AMD different version but just can't tell which one is which and what speed they are running? Is it worth it for me to upgrade?

Thanks in advance.

A Athlon64 3000+ 2.0ghz would peform at the same speed as a Intel P4 3ghz.

If your upgrading your cpu to a Athlon 3000+ then it's not worth it. It will be faster in gaming but not by much. If upgrading I would get a 3700+ or better.

3Ghz P4 isnt so bad, you could try overclocking it a bit, Intels Conroe processor comes out later this year, and its going to be fast, easy to keep cool, and power efficient. Then if Conroe doesnt live up to expectations there is always the AMD path.

Probably similar in performance, or slightly quicker than Amd64's clock for clock, and available in speeds up to 2.66Ghz + an 'extreme edition' as well.

Im running a 3.2Ghz Northwood, and for me I feel the best choice is to wait. Conroe 2.66, PCI Express Geforce 7900GTX, something along those lines. Should make a nice Xmas present for myself at the end of the year ;).

Why upgrade if your looking for a similar AMD as to what you already have

Try overclocking your current cpu otherwise you could pick up a cheap fx55 second hand which would be much faster

You're forgetting about AMD's new platform, AM2 - out 6/6/06 apparently.

I've already heard of a dualcore FX for it with 4mb cache, and with DDR2 support upto 800mhz and AMD having an onboard memory controller on there CPU's it will get a big performance boost just from the new memory alone, deffinately a lot more than a Intel system gets with DDR2. Just with that it should easily outperform Conroe clock for clock. Let alone an FX with 4mb cache, that will also proberly have a higher clock speed.

I'd recommend just overclocking the P4 for now, as others have said. It's not exactly slow what you have already anyway..
