Just about to throw a system together for general work use but I have one of 2 Pentium 4 chips to choose and I don't know which would be the better for everyday use?

Pentium 4 2.4GHz 800MHz FSB 512Kb Cache (SL6WF)

Pentium 4 2.8GHz 533MHz FSB 1Mb Cache (SL7E2)

Both chips are socket 478. Which one should I install and why? Thanks!

I would personally take the P4 2.4GHz 800FSB. It's Northwood based so it runs cooler thus in turn less noise. While it has less L2 cache, Northwood is just a touch quicker than Prescott "clock for clock". Also I'm not so sure that the P4 2.8GHz 533FSB Prescott had Hyperthreading tech or not.

Vote for 2.4 as well, cooler and prolly as fast due to the fsb and better Northwood IPC. Either way you prolly would'nt see the difference as much as hear it, if you use the Prescott

Thanks, that was my gut feeling anyway. I don't think the Prescotts supported hyper-threading as it came out of a HP PC which didn't list it as an option whereas the Northwood CPU came from a Dell PC and was enabled by default.

I'll plump for the Northwood chip then unless anyone else has any contradictory advice?!
