Hey ppl just considering to buy the new pentium dual core 3.46 ghz extrme edtion. It dosent seem to be on the market yet well not on the ocuk website anyway. Do you think i should go for this processer or opt for the 3.8 ghz ex edtion.

Your help will be very much appercaited

Tanks Pajaman

i personally would hold of to around march > june, intel have 3 new processors coming

yonah already proving to mop a fx 60 if overclocked to same speed
memrom compatbile with above socket, more intructions cache etc
conroe goodbye amd

Amd may have good processors but the boards suck nvidia ati,

i dont think 900 series are too bad, i know vapor matt on here has one and from what i have seen he's getting some great overclocks and bench results on it

i would never buy an 'expensive edition' though

So, A cpu that will cost the same as the opteron 170 which is already available, and memrom/conroe close the gap on AMD. Thats all they do, as for the boards sucking that is a load of rubbish.

stigggeh that 940 still runs very hot @ stock never mind overclocked
idles about 130 watts > 200watts overclocked

the 800 series dual core are the same all these processors made in last 2 years have been flops and intel knows it, these processors are just stop gaps till the real deal comes along, its took time but will pay of shortly for intel

intel boards (chipsets) are rock solid, just waiting on the processor now

i still prefer my asus p4c800 e delux to the nvidia chipset and its nealry 2 years old, (reason) plug all 8 usb2 devices in @ same time, scanners, printers, ipods phones, microsoft keyboard & mouse usb wireless < could never get this thing to work on any nvidia chipset (the keyboard and mouse) that told me theirs a problem with the actual chipset itself, as i build loads of computers and i use the same keyboard and mouse to install and config windows XP SP2, even gets reconzied by SIS VIA although sometimes they dont work in bios,
but nvidia constantly freezes when xp loaded changing usb port doesnt help works for a few secs then pauses and stutters across screen that with the nvidia chipset

no way iam slating amd because there processors are superb run cold no need for expensive cooling solutions equipment
but then they cant even run 4gb of ram in dual channel without dropping to 333mhz wich is rather pointless if you buy expensive ram, but motherboard manufactures no this but still sell you overrated products like extra raid and crap to make up for the poor chipsets

Its a mighty CPU and with overclocking is an extreme beast but even as an Intel fanboy I would say not worth the £822 asking price as you would also need a decent cooler (Zalman 9500 @ £48 including P&).

If you really want Intel go for the 670J as only £450 ish and still the fastest Intel single core CPU. In real world gaming/computer useage you will struggle to find much performance difference between 670J & 955XE.

With my 670J I can even rip DVDs/Music whilst playing games either in a window or full screen! AMD are better gaming CPUs as they are designed for that above all else.

Intel are better for allround useage but slower in most games.

If you are a hardcore overclocker then Intel is the way to go as on phase cooling you can get up 7Ghz + on the 670J & up to 5Ghz on the 955XE.

I would go for the Pentium D 950 instead of the 955 EE. In a few cases the HT on the 955 EE is actually a hinderance. Besides, if I can clock my current 640 to 4.0GHz on air with a cheap motherboard and value RAM you should easily be able to get something like 4.2 -> 4.5GHz out of a 950.

aGAIN....The Opteron 150, which is clocked at 2.4 Ghz, is essentially a Deluxe AMD 4000+ San Diego, with a much stronger memory controller. It clocked very easily on Air to 2.8 Ghz, which is the same as an AMD FX-57, AMD Fastest Chip (and fastest in the world).

On Watercooling or Phase Change cooling you would get even more out of it, possible 3 Ghz or more.

Enough said... Over Priced and yes there are Pentium Fan Boys buy there just that... the choice is yours... you seen the stats!!!!

Its simple really, save some cash! get a 940 and get yourself the new asus

Asus P5WD2-E Premium Intel 975X

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400 TwinX

and with a decent air cooler get yourself 4.2 to 4.5g rocket PC or water cool it to 4.6 plus!

the 9 series CPU's are much improved over the old 8 series, and if your thinking single core intel, forget the 5 series, go for the 670 series with double the cache, great cpu's, better still get the 660 clock it and again get 4.2 to 4.5 on air, or even better wait a few weeks as the new cedermill 65nm cpu's will filter through and get 4.6 on air! but you will need that asus board to get the best outa your intel CPU!

On my intel 820D 2.8Ghz@ 2.94, my temps are 25 deg C idle and 38 deg C load. Room temp is 20 deg C. By using a good cooler like the zalman, Big typhoon or scythe ninja 1000, it is possible to reduce the temps to an acceptable level.

Mate, i'm not one for slating people, but it sounds like you're nitpicking MASSIVE amounts. Who the hell uses 4gb of ram for god sake?

I was going to say that, but thought whats the point really. But I agree completely.

Ok intel have slightly better chipsets than the nforce 4 but then the highest intel motherboard is £175 afterall. And the reason AMD can't run 4x1gb is because they have an onboard memory controller, they are actually pushing technology forward not sideways by just increasing core speed - being a new thing of course it wont be perfect first time round.

word on the street says onboard mem controller is on its way to intel

edit: just noticed its quite an old article :(

If it were right, thats 2 years later, copying AMD and only on their server parts ;)

Good point

AMD can run 4GB at DDR400 now with the later cores, just at 2T timings :)

If youre going for dual core i would go for amd. They seem to be stamping over intel a treat in this field. Cheaper and not much difference between the 2.

For the same price of a Pentium 4 dual core you can get an opty 170 and a decent graphics card.
