My moms old Dell Pentium 4 is having some problems. Basically freezing, stalling and extreme slowdowns.

I Have been working though the list of problems but dont know what program to use to check the CPU temperature. Have googled but havent had much luck.

Does anyone remember any good software?

Cheers

Both Speedfan and a program called Hardware Sensor Monitor only report the Harddrive temp.

IIRC, the P4 range, especially the higher models of 3.0Ghz+ ran extremely hot in comparison to A64 range.

I have an old 2.4Ghz Non-HT in an old machine and it idles at over 50. :o

Best bet would be too reapply paste to the heatsink and see how the temps change over the following days. :)

I would take a look at the fan to check that it's not clogged up with dust.

^ ill definitely be doing that. was just curious about temps. thanks :)

Speedfan reports quite a lot of temperatures actually, plus voltages and obviously, fan speeds.

I know that, I was just saying that when installed on this particular Dell only HDD temps are detected.

Have a look in the bios, this will give an indicator of what it is idling at. P4s do run hot but then they are capable of doing that, my old one hit 80 degrees quite regularly and never caused me any problems :)

Prescott's (or as I lke to call them, Presshot's :D) run very warm indeed!

My old 3.2 used to idle at 48c with an Arctic Freezer 7!

I did lap it last week as I'm reverting the whole system back to standard, and now with the stock cooler it does 39-40c at idle which is much more like it.
