Pentium and Celeron - What's the difference?

I've been asked to find out for my computing class but wouldn't know where to start looking.
What exactly is the difference between Intel Pentium processors and Intel Celeron processors.
I always thought pentiums were more suited to multimedia and such while celerons were better for general use but im nto too sure

does anyone have any ideas?
