Upgraded BIOS on MSI Gaming 5 Z97 mobo to 1.5, was supposed to give better G3258 support but when I use OC Genie to get to an easy 4.3GHz I just get a 99 error on boot :(

First time I rebooted got the message: "OC Genie enabled, don't change anything in BIOS" or words to that effect, then nothing.

Can't even use the Windows MSI app as it consistently crashes before even loading (it *had* worked before)...

Not sure what I'm doing wrong *sigh*

Pentium AE without OC is pretty, well not worthless, but a bit pointless

Do as "scotsdragon" said clear cmos first.

Error 99 is generally to do with I/O back panel and anything plugged into the motherboard pin headers so try to unplug them and see if it boots. Just plug what you need ssd/hdd and keyboard and mouse on the back of mobo (use button on mobo to turn on pc.)

If it continues to do it is more likely to by faulty motherboard, however it could be cpu too so the best thing is to contact msi about it if problem remains after unplug of I/O back panel and anything plugged into the motherboard pin headers. Hope this helped.

Thanks guys. I'm just using it in default mode atm, will try your solutions a bit later when I summon up the courage LOL :D

try ocing through the bios oc genie if its software based will usually be pants

Yeah I tried that, same result.

However I agree with you about going thru BIOS: don't trust the Windows apps one bit (well they're not working atm anyway LOL, appcrash on start)... :(

But yeah, it's the same with a BIOS flash, not going to take the risk with a Windows-based version ;)

I don't have the same motherboard as you, but I also get issues with OC Genie on my MSI board. Neither the button on the board, or the bios setting will make the board automatically overclock.

Manual overclocking is easy enough though, so i'd see if you can do it that way. Funnily enough though my BIOS update made manual OC'ing work when it didn't before.
