Pentium D 805 Buying Help !!

Hello

I ordered mine this other day:

805D
P5WGD2-WS (I recommend on using a motherboard with at least 8 phase power regulators, since when overclocking, the regulators get extremely HOT)
Scythe Ninja Plus (Discard the fan, is useless)
Delta Force fan - 120mm (Not quite but superb performance, mount it as the cpu cooler)
G.Skill 800GHZ 2GB 4-4-4-12 ram
Enermax Liberty 620 power supply
Gainward 7950GX2 x 1

With the above I am able to clock the 805D to 4.4GHZ at 1.6v with idle temp of 58 and load temp to 69+ but since this is too much heat I downgraded it to:

3.8GHZ at 1.41v with idle temp of 46 and load temp of 61-65.
(Is really easy to overclock it to such speed)

I heard that P5WGD2-WS will support Coroe in the future with a new bios but not 100% sure. Read it in the XS forum.

There is a lot to be said for both arguments, either buying a really cheap board and the 805 saving money to upgrade whole lot later, or buying a better quality board, probably gettting a better overclock, not saving so much money, but having a better performing machine that will not need upgrading so soon.

I think the mistake here is trying to buy a board right now that you can upgrade to Conroe later on. This really restricts you to a very few boards, none of which are availableat OcUK right now and are as expensive as they will ever be.

In my opinion you may as well look at any future processor upgrade as requireing a motherboard upgrade at the same time. Things just change so fast, for example I sold my socket 754 board as soon as 939 was available, going from a 3200 to a 3000 venice core, because of course 754 was finished and I would need 939 for any of the future processors. Well, I did change the processor once, from the 3000 to a X2 4400, but also changed the board also, because bettered specced ones were available. So anyways my point is that 939 ended same time as 754, so when shopping you may as well buy the best value that is available now, and not try and guess what the future holds.

Get which ever board suits your needs for the 805, forget Conroe till you are ready to buy one.

Nice setup mate :)

THanks Stelly!

K.C:

Yes I do notice a vdrop (Only in Windows), eg: when I set it to 1.41v, the HW monitor inside the bios shows the v are very stable but once I get into Windows, observing from the AI Booster provided by Asus, I can clearly see the v moving between 1.37 to 1.45.

Thats why I set the v to 1.41 instead of 1.4 as it wasn't very stable under heavy load.

Celesa: You might want to look up the Ghetto Pencil trick written by Proth over at XS.

Nice little trick that prevents the Vdroop on some Asus boards. Worked a treat on my P5WD2.
