Hey guys,

I've currently got a Pentium D 805 @ 3Ghz with the Zalman LGA775 Aero Flower
Cooler.

I'm looking to upgrade to Core2Duo this Christmas, as my girlfriend said she might buy me one as a Christmas/Birthday present (as my birthday is on Dec 27th!) :D :D

I'm just wondering, can the E6300 & E6400 be overclocked to E6600 or even E6700 speeds?

Is it recommended to buy a cheaper Core2Duo then overclock it, or just buy the fastest CPU you can?

Also, what are the benefits of C2D over Pentium D's?

Thanks in advance :)

My 6300 at stock is as fast as my 805 was at 3.7ghz while running cooler and using less power. It is currently at 2.8ghz with fairly cheap RAM.

so you're E6300 @ 1.86Ghz is as fast as a 3.7Ghz PD?

The work done per clock amount has changed again.

Like the difference between AMD processors and Intel processors before conroe

So basically a 1.86ghz conroe is more effient now per clock than the old intels. Which is why it's so lovely. :p

Overclock the babies and you'd be amazed! :)

Wow, that's amazing, i never knew how powerful they really were!!
I'm a music producer, and my PD is maxing out really easily, even at 3Ghz, and the temps are going thru the roof, reaching 77 degrees C.

What sort of temps do the conroe's reach? Stock temps and OCed temps :)

We'll at stock with my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro my temp is 31c (idle) - 37c (load) and this is with the cooler running very low speed.

I did manage to overclock my conroe to 2.4ghz and the temp went up to 57c.

niiiice

what temps can the conroes cope with? 80oC??

how well would it cope with my Zalman cooler?

I would keep it at least under 60c...lower if possible. And that Zalman cooler is great....it will be just fine.

Cheaper and overclock, that is what this place is about after all imo. The advantage of paying more is only slight and your better off putting that towards the faster memory you will need and the motherboard

77c at 3ghz on an 805D ?
got mine running at 3.8ghz going between 43-55c at most.

Only thing stopping me overclock anymore is the DS4 heating up more than the CPU :\

just out of curiosity anyone know how to cool a DS4 better ? D:

Stick a fan over the VRMs, as the cpu runs at a relatively low FSB but draws a lot of power thats probably what is getting too warm.

you know what that really concerned me too; i'm relatively new to overclocking, and building computers in general... do you reckon this could be happening becuase I haven't fitted the fan properlly, like, not enough thermal paste or something...?

too much thermal paste is bad, put a pea like amount and spread it over the cpu with an old credit card or sum thing. thermal paste is there just to fill in any air gaps between the cooler and the cpu.

yeah make sure you dont use a lot of thermal paste.
Ive just stuck with the thermal pad that was on my arctic freezer, cant be bothered to change it until i get conroe.

I have fans over the motherboard in the case, the general temperature is cool, but as soon as i do anything intensive the DS4 heats up a fair bit, just thought that there are better ways of cooling it , besides water. ie better heatsink/fan combo you can buy
