I got a Pentium D 805 to let me build my new PC before conroes were widely available but it's not doing too well.

The fan seems to run at nearly full pelt whenever I'm doing pretty much anything, even installing software, copying files etc.. and it's making the PC very difficult to use.
I had thought it was the Radeon X1900XT but it's definitely the CPU.

Any tips ?

I'm using a Gigabyte DS4 and have tried setting the fan to Intel Quiet and PWM as well as the other options with no real difference.

Stock cooling? Min speed is 2500rpm which isnt that quiet anyway

You're right on both counts.

What quiet cooler would you recommend ?
The last time I bought a CPU cooler the Zalman ones had a good reputation.

CNPS 8000 or the 9500 would be good bets.
I must say I am very pleased with my freezer 7 pro modded with a 120mm akasa amber fan though. (805 @ 3.8ghz, 51c both cores 100% load and very quiet)

Scythe Mine
Scythe Ninja
Tuniq Tower
Thermalright ultra 120
Gigabyte G-Power pro (at min speed)
Thermaltake Big typhoon

Take your pick really

Edit: what speed is the 805 at?

Any of those would be good, freezer 7 pro + 120mm fan would be cheapest. Seen somewhere that does it + 120mm arctic fan for about £23 with delivery.

Also, with a DS4... try for 4ghz ;)

I have that exact setup (with stock intel HSF). Mine isn't that noisy at all and I have it clocked to 3GHz and have the side off atm.

Noise is fine! Though I have the silent HIS X1900XT, so are you sure its not the gfx card?

I have that graphics card as well and it's definitely not it. I ruled it out earlier when I did think it was to blame and did some testing :)

Yes, throw that Smithfield POS in the trash where it belongs tbh.

Be patient. You'll get your Conroe........eventually.

lol, I know I'll get it in the end. Thing is until then I need to be able to use my PC and to do that I have to fix the din that the fan on this 805 makes :(

I'm liking the look of that artic freezer pro 7

Hmmm thats interesting then, my cpu is pretty quiet @3GHz so I'm at a loss why yours is so loud!

Depends on what you consider loud really... anything over 22-23 db and it is too loud imo (rated at that anyway, long as it is fairly accurate)

if your not overclocking and dont want to spend cash on an better cooler yet just use speedfan and limit the fan to 60/70 % fan speed.

at 100% its possibly the noiseiest fan ever lol
