Just looking at the temp of my newly installed chip, it's running at 80C.
That sounds really hot to me, or is it normal? I have no idea what chips normally run at?
I just have that nagging feeling the heatsink + fan isn't on properly

Lol

Why is it running hot? there's a cooler master fan and heatsink on there and the thermal gunky stuff is on the cpu. I hate PC's !!!

It's this one

Not from oc, I know :o

from cold, I can go into the BIOS and see the chip getting up to 60 in a matter of a couple of minutes! it then keeps creeping up to 82, I then turn it off for fear of damage.

I phoned Aria and the guy reckoned it was me not putting the fan on properly, but I spent ages making sure it was level and sturdily on. I've since taken if off, and the thermal paste was all over the chip so it is touching, I've put it back on again taking great care, and still shoots up to 80c quick on idle. It's as if the heatsink is not even there.

Do you think it is still not on right? I can't see the heatsink having a fault as forgive me if I'm wrong but it's just a bit of metal and a fan, no?

Was told that the chips are rarely to blame and I would be billed if if was okay under testing

Could you post a pic of it and read the FAQ... (no competitors!)

The cooler looks even worse than the stock one tbh, if it is all allu.

Even if it was a poor fan, the temps wouldn't rise that fast surely! I'll post a pic later, if this post is still here :o

Yeah the cooler does not look very good and pentium d's do run hot.

I would suggest reseating the heatsink to ensure it is on properly first.

Is the fan plugged in? Did you put thermal paste on it?

Fan is on, paste was on the heatsink from the factory, just removed the plastic backing. I will have a play tonight with the seating of the heatsink and see if anything improves.

Do chips ever run hot because they're faulty or is this a rarity? and I take it the motherboard cannot be at fault?

Sorted! One of the four connectors is really dodgy, I went into the BIOS and watched the temp creep up, then applied firm pressure to the fan/heatsink and sure enough the temps went back down!
So spent ages making sure every connector was alright, and now it's keeping 36C

Thanks all.

Oh - can anyone point me in the direction of a free thermal analysis tool?
