hello,
i was thinking of overclocking my CPU but not that much at the moment.
it's a pentium D running standard cooler socket LGA775 3.20ghz dual core (i think.)
can anyone recommend a safe limit to go to at the moment running a stock cooler. also any programs that will do so will be a great help at end of month getting a new cooler possibly arctic cooling or an akasa one.

so can someone please tell me some software and maybe how to do it
aswell :P as it is my first ever overclock and dont want to break my CPU.

Thanks.
Rowan :)

*EDIT*ive heard you can overclock in the bios but i dont wanna mess with that and i have tried but it didnt work ive been told that some pcs overclocking in bios is locked is this correct?

(p.s new sig :))

yeah i was going to say 3.5 but now i need someone to post exactly how much i can go to just to be on the safe side and what programs to use for it :P

Used to run a pentium D 930 ( 3ghz) @ 3.9 ghz for ages a while ago, voltage wasn't even that high but temp was relatively high ( but I only have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro...) , keep it under 70C load and up the volts gradually, seen these do 4+ ghz with good cooling but the cooling is often the problem...

You overclock in bios generally, you could use software to find higher limits but it's generally less stable, and if you set it too high you could lock up your pc and possibly damage data...
Branded pc's usually have locked biosses. What mainboard do you have ?

what cooler where you running when you overclocked snowdog because mine is on a stock cooler atm so i will overclock not that much but at end of month when i get my new cooler i should be able to go higher :)

Hmm you guys are quick, I was editing my post and you replied :p.

Anyways as in my last post, a freezer 7 pro, and the mainboard was an asus P5LD2 ( 945p chipset).

I reckon he can go to 4ghz if he has a good cooler.

well what do you think i can go to on stock cooler also the new cooler i am getting is an alpin pro 7 (is this ok) not the freezer but in a few months id probs upgrade from the alpine to the freezer

ooh and the mainboard... *loads up cpu-z and waits* lol
CPU-Z says exactly this:
manufacturer: ASUSTEK computer inc
Model: EMERY2 2.00
chipset: intel i945p rev: a1
southbridge: intel 82801GB(ICH7/R)
LPCIO: SMSC

Bios: pheonix technologies inc
version 3.15 (probs an update :P)

also how do i unlock because i tried before and it was locked and i have never known how to unlock my bios settings to overclock :P

thanks

Not too sure about unlocking the bios, it appears to be a mainboard specially made for HP and other brands...
Also, I see the board has ddr1 ( correct me if I'm wrong), this will be somewhat limit how high your fsb can go, make sure to downclock your ram and manually loosen the timings when trying to overclock your cpu, else you might be limited by your ram long before you find the limit of your cpu.
With the stock cooler you won't be able to go very high, 3.6 max I think, and that's only if it's properly seated and makes (really) good contact. No idea about the alpin 7 pro, never had one.

also 3.6 is higher than what i have at the moment :P im at 3.2 so .4 will be better and yes my cooler is properly placed and has never been removed since i got the pc as i didnt want to break the thermal seal :)

anyone else that looks at this thread can they tell me about how to unlcok the overclock settings in the bios please?
thanks
rowan :)
