looking at a laptop one has a pentium dual core p6200 with 4gb ram and a 500gb hard drive. one has a core i3 with 3gb of ram and a 320gb hard drive. now i no the i3 is faster but will the pentium match it with the speed of the i3 with the extra ram and then ill have the bonus of extra hard drive, or will the i3 be a lot faster even with less ram. the i3 is more expensive thats why i ask the laptop will only be used for internet and office. been of the pc seen for a while any advice greatly apreciated thank you.

both seem to have 3mb l2 cache

You're mostly loosing hyperthreading on the pentium vs the i3. For most workloads this won't make a lot of difference. For workloads where it will make a difference, you probably want something faster anyway

PassMark Software has delved into the thousands of benchmark results that PerformanceTest users have posted to its web site and produced five Intel vs AMD CPU charts to help compare the relative speeds of the different processors. Higher score is better.

Intel Pentium P6200 @ 2.13GHz Average CPU Mark 1628

Intel Core i3 330M @ 2.13GHz Average CPU Mark 1967

Intel Core i3-2310M @ 2.10GHz Average CPU Mark 2620

The core i3 will make a difference, but how much would you notice it in real life usage?... I am not sure. Which core i3 does it come with?

Regarding the RAM, do these machines come with 32bit or 64bit windows? If the former then the 4gb ram will not be addressable anyway so it is a pointless extra (32bit windows can only really use about 3gb after it has allocated video memory etc). Just food for thought :)

Core i3-2330M beats some older i5's on Passmark
