I currently have a Pentium-M 2gig at 2.6gig which has been fine for all games up until the release of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

Now without going into boring details I plan on making a nice quad core rig next year, but wish to make a start on this rig now but using a cheap E2180 CPU as a stop gap on a nice P35 board.

Will a Core Duo E2180 be faster than a Pentium-M @ 2.6gig?
I know it has dual cores but it's obviously a budget chip and only has 1meg cache compared to the P-M's 2meg and I need a quick fix before Xmas for SC:FA.

I'll be running a 8800GT 512meg card also.

Any thoughts?

yeh it'll be faster. they overclock like a .... well a overclocking thing. that is to say a lot, it'll be a good stopgap. plus if you buy the cooler you will be putting on the quad you can get even more juice out of it :)

it will really help with sup com as well

* Ignore, I read wrong...*
Get the desktop dual core, not too expensive and will offer better performance. :)
Should get a bit of cash if you sold off your desktop pentium-m setup too.

Thanks all. Yep the Pentium-M was on an Asus slocket adapter card. It's been a great setup until Supreme Commander came along. It simply runs much faster on anything multicore, even my housemates AMD 4400+ runs it MUCH faster than mine.

I'm going to make a nice Quadcore setup next year but as finances are harsh with Xmas being here I just need a quick fix for now,

the E2180 is a good card, clocks easy to 3ghz+

the 2140 and 2160 are also good, and clock well themselves, and are a touch cheaper.
