Ok, so I've been offered a C2D or a Pentium D and a mobo to go with whichever one I pick.
I'm currently running an AMD AM2 4600+ at stock, with 2GB Corsair XMS2 (DDR2) RAM.

The C2D is a 1.66GHz one, which says to me it's the 6300, but the bloke isn't sure what the model is.
The Pentium is a Pentium D 930 or 935, running at 3.3GHz.

I've been told before that Pentium Ds get very hot, and that C2Ds are brilliant to clock, and run cool. I'm unsure on the mobo that's being offerd up with this, but it runs a 1066mb thingy so I've been told.

I'm just wondering, which chip to go for, or to stay with the AMD setup?

The 6300 is 1.86GHz, not 1.66, and I'm pretty sure the only 1.66GHz C2D is the mobile T5500. Make sure you get the exact model number before committing yourself.
Having had both, I would definitely take almost any C2D over any Pentium D. I have a load of Pentium D 820s in my care and an E6300 walks all over them, running the same application. As you've already been told, C2D runs much cooler than Pentium D. It also has Intel's virtualisation technology which Pentium D. Oh, Allendale C2D doesn't have this but Conroe and better do.

I can't help you with whether it's worth changing at all but go C2D if you do.
 
Well the offer is completely free, so I mean I can't exactly lose out or anything. - although I know the guy is prone to telling porkies about giving away free stuff.

I'm mostly wondering what is the better choice out of the two of the chips, if neither is going to be much better than the AM2, then I may aswell decline the offer.

The chap that's offered the bits was at work when he offered it, so wasn't sure on the specs of each chip etc. but he'll be back home later this evening and I'll be finding out just what the CPUs and the mobo are.

The general consensus is to get the C2D though yes?

Obviously if the mobo is uterly poor there isn't a huge amount of point in me going for it, as I'd rather have a free upgrade :p

1.66ghz means its an E2140 which has 1mb cache as opposed to 2mb, but they are great chips and overclock easily, I would find out what motherboard he is offering you though if you wish to oc.

T5500 2mb L2 cache. We have 60 of these, brillantly fast and extremely cool.

Well I spoke to the fella and he should be sending the mobo and CPU out on Thurs, so arrive Fri/Sat. I did a little googling, the T5500 is a CPU for the laptop is it not? Does it work in a desktop board? - I really hope he's wrong about the speed and it is a decent CPU like the 6300.

If it's an OK mobo, and a naff CPU I'll just run it for a bit, flog my AM2 stuff and grab a decent C2D chip :).

Obviously it's free so it's not like a big worry or anything if it is naff kit, as I said to him, if it's really poor I'll just send it back to him, no real loss.

I'll try to talk to him later and see if he knows what the models of the CPU and Mobo are for sure.

Would people advise against trying a mobile chip in a static system?

Could be a T5500 and a 479 desktop board couldn't it?
Can still get some very nice clocks with those and they are spot on performers, wouldn't be too bad.
 
Yes, the machines i'm talking about have 945GM chipsets i think and desktop boards built in, sort of an all in one with LCD built in as well, very tiny footprint, extremely fast and dead silent.
 
Well I was offered either CPU plus a mobo, now I think it's the same mobo, whichever CPU, so hopefully he's gotton it wrong with the speed of the C2D.

We'll see at the end of the week I suppose...
a) If he is BSing me, if not...
b) What the CPU is
c) What the mobo is
