AKA: "The Office Run"

Why do you always get two or three people that think their work is so important that they sprint everywhere around the office? It drives me mad and there seems to be a little sub-culture of office runners who feel the need to sprint the eight yards to another desk to pick up their laptop. Or get to the kettle. I'm sure there's some psychological reason behind it as I notice they don't jog on the way to work, just when inside. They all seem to be the same kind of people as well - mid level management that use terms like "milestone" and "low-hanging fruit".

Do we have any office runners here that can shed any light on the subject?

Do you work in a call centre? It sounds like the kind of thing kids do at daycare to warm up their muscles before reading the 'Big Brown Horse' book.

Actually, do you work in a daycare?

There's a person here who does this. It used to annoy me, and then I stopped noticing it. Now you've mentioned it, I notice it again. I hate you. :(

I will run to the reception like a child if I've just been informed that a shiny new toy has just been delivered for me :p

Alternatively, if the server room is on fire, I tend to get a bit of a move on to try and sort it out...

But no, I'm not petty/pathetic enough to get wound up by someone moving at a higher than average pace in my place of work... I'm usually too busy actually doing... well... work (or browsing OcUK)

Haven't seen anyone run in my office but there are a few who take their shoes off and walk around the office in their socks.

Really touches a nerve, not sure why I care, just annoys me.

I'm not petty or pathetic, how rude. It's just one of those things you notice that annoys you for some reason. Sounds like you need to start jogging round the office more if it's a reason to release tension.

I can think of very few jobs where your deadline is important enough to necessitate running, but you still work in an office.

I once ran across the office in my old job, but it was in relation to an imminent deadline for uploading an electronic copy of a tender (I worked for a construction company).

The only office runners I've seen are the ones heading for the loo after a long meeting or to catch a train. Nobody bothers with a fire alarm.

This happens at my work too. We have runners and sock people.

Sock people don't annoy me though!

I love it when there is a drill and the manager is going 'quick quick leave your stuff just go' but everyone spends about 5 mins getting their coat on, taking their lunch out the fridge and finding their car keys :D

Think it's seen as 'Walking with Purpose' by management types, sounds like some of them are gonna go through the floor in the crappy old portacabin block I'm in at the mo!

We did have a Swiss guy who used to change into sandals, even when he had massive holes in his socks and his big toe popping out. His office still smells now.

No. Well sort of, I suppose the first line guys technically make it a call center of sorts.

Not in daycare either, kids annoy me. Especially on those gay little scooters.
