People Using Virgin 20MB XL Package - In here

I thought everyone replaced theirs when going to 20mbit? They sent me out one when it was launched/upgraded.

I haven't been on it long, I actually have two newish modems since the last occupants left theirs. They both work fine for 20 mbit. Can't remember the exact model though.

I have the Motorola 5100 here, for 20MB does it really matter what modem anyone ends up with? or do some perform better than others?

I have a Ambit 250 (ntl branded) so I get nothing:-

We've just checked and the modem you've got is perfect for delivering your broadband service, so you don't need to do a thing. Thanks for your time today!

unless you're suggesting I lie :eek::D

Mmm didn't know that. Mine's an Ambit 250 and that was given new with the 20 mbit package, so anyone with one of those shouldn't expect anything as headrat has discovered.

Quick Tip:

If you guys do get a new modem, it should work find when it's connected directly to your computer, but it didn't work through my Linksys Wireless Modem (4 Port Switch) straight off.

Here are the steps I used (it may differ with the type of Router/Modem you have):

  1. Plug your computer directly into the cable modem.
  2. Use "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" from the windows command prompt to get a new IP address from the cable modem.
  3. Unplug your computer from the cable modem.
  4. Plug your computer into the router, leaving the router unplugged from the cable modem.
  5. Use ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to get an IP address from the router.
  6. Enter the router's configuration with your web browser.
  7. Tell the router to Clone your Mac Address. wait a few seconds.
  8. Plug the router into the cable modem.
  9. In the web interface, tell the router to ask for a new IP address from the cable modem. (This is the "DHCP Renew" Button) The cable modem should think that you are the PC that just spoke with it and will let your router work again. You might have to ask it to renew a couple times.

The new modem should work fine with a router right away. Just need to turn the router off for a minute, swap the modem over and power it on, then put the router back on. Worked for me with a Netgear.

It didn't work for mine. Was odd. Just had to clone my PC's MAC Address.

I did try multiple power cyclings, but to no avail. But this seeems to have sorted it :).

I had a motorola surfboard and set up the new modem today. Straight forward to set up, its quite small compared to the old brick, but just transfer all the cables over. Got a letter with all the steps, they have to enable the modem from their end which they fail to mention in the letter. They say 'IF you have a problem with the internet connection, call us' - but you have to call them, just happens to be free (?) if you have the phone package, which I do. I didn't check the speed on the old modem but I've checked the new one at 15.65mbps on my 20mb deal.

i got the email a couple of days ago offering a new modem, can't see the point really as my M5100 works fine for 20mbit.

I got my new "free" modem today.

CHeap looking inbranded plastic thingy that says virgin on it with a free plastic spanner and a wall wart to add to the mess.

Certainly looks a lot poorer than teh old Motorolla?
