anyone got a immediate family or prehaps grandparents who blatently skimp on having hot water avaliable on tap, and only turns the boiler on for 30minutes when they are going to have a bath?

im asking because this is what my grandparents are like  they aint poor they live quite well in other areas.

During the middle of winter we do, as there's generally no need to have the immersion heater on all the time.

For 9 months a year though the solar panels on the roof mean that we have hot water readily available.

Yeah our hot water only goes on twice a day :/

But you can get one of those boilers that goes on when you run the tap and then heats it up there and then...

Rephrase the question:

Does anyone else like to save energy and reduce their energy bills?

My water in on for 45 mins in the morning (for 2 showers) and about 20 mins at night (for the dishes). If I want anything more I need to heat it up. I can't understand why anyone would pay to heat water when they don't want it.

I do exactly that! I havn't much need for hot water other than then, just boil a kettle for the washing up and wash with cold water. Simple!

Genuinely don't know:)
Pass - but I very much doubt it. I do know that my electric bill is very cheap doing it this way.

depends, with on demand you have the ability to use the right amount of water rather than leaving it in the tank so I'd say that was better. even if you're "just keeping water heated" you've still got to raise its temp to that level in the first place.

Doesn't boiling a kettle use quite a bit of power? It would probably be cheaper just to keep the water heated :p

Maybe i'm a bit OCD (:p) but i wash my hands a fair amount each day. Obviously after going to the loo etc. You mean you wash your hands in cold water all the time? What if you've just cooked and handled raw meat or something?

I don't really understand the point behind this. Have the boiler on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, and surely there will be a constant supply of hot water in the tank?

Also using a kettle is about the worst way to get hot water, as it heats it to boiling point (needing a lot of energy), and is far more costly than a gas boiler.

Meh, dusn't bother me that much. :p

It may be more efficient to keep the water heated, but my boiler is just on a switch so I can't be bothered with messing around turning it on and off.

Sounds like you don't pay your own bills.
Why leave boiler on when you're not going to use hot water for most of the day?
