When you're walking towards someone in say a busy high street, and there's no room to move clearly to one side. I always make an effort to twist sideways to allows more room yet find 9/10 people who I come accross don't.

Why is this. From my point of view I've been raised to open door or hold them open, say thank you and to move a little to avoid walking into someone.

The other week I was walking through a shopping centre that was fairly empty when a man in his 40's walked straight into me even though I did the 'shoulder twist' to give more room. He made no effort to move and looked really annoyed that 'Id hit him'

Its not that I look like a push over as I'm 6'4" and about 15 stone but most people seem to want to walk into me. Do any other OcUKers find this a problem for them too?

I've found this to be a uniquely british phenomenon. At least compared with Hawaii, California, and Oregon. Not to mention the way people in service positions treat you. TBH the only company I have ever dealt with in this country that actually is friendly/personable/genuinely seems to care about you (and the business you are giving them) is Lloyds TSB. And that's really only my local Summertown Branch...

Anyway I still move aside for people because I don't like being bumped then accused for bashing into people.

I do know what you mean....you do keep doing it for while, then give up and divert all resources to the relavant shoulder/arm/hip and increase to ramming speed

Yep get it all the time aswell really annoying :/ im slim but 6'1 you cant miss me, and i do as you do the sideways thing but still get knocked into :/ although if i have my bike jacket and helmet in my hand it dont happen as much :p

yep get it all the time..........same as when you are approaching several people who insist on hogging the whole pavement and everyone has to move past them.
where i work has some of the most ignorant people i have come across..they will know that people are behind them to get inside the building but only open the door wide enough for them to just squeeze through, will blatantly stand and chat in front of the door you are trying to get through and look at you dumbly when you say excuse me! grrrrrr!!

It's probably because of your physical size. Scrawny little gits walking into you makes them feel hard.

Some of the worst culprits here I think are old people with wheeled trollies or people with pushchairs. Most of those I've come across seem to think they can just walk in a straight line and everybody will move aside. I mean, when I'm out in the city pushing my nephew around I don't do this.

I always make my best effort to do the shoulder twist thing, but when nobody else even tries to get out of my way, god forbid, I do get really angry.

Oh, and another thing: why do people with pushchairs always seem to stop right in the doorway of every store? Seriously, what a stupid place to stop on a busy Saturday. Just the other week I, and everyone else, had to try and manoeuvre around 2 pushchairs parked in the entrance of a department store.

Yeah, some stupid woman walked into me, her fault, i tried to avoid her "sorry" i said just to be polite, she just turns round "you should be"

people are just impolite today, i try to be as much as a gentleman as possible.

I always just stand still and kindly direct the person which side of me they need to walk, if there's no room to just side pass them. Some people are incredibly inconsiderate, some just think they're hard for bumping into people.

Just the other week in town we (3 of us) were walking down quite a large, wide path of pavement to the shopping centre. Plenty of room. 2 lads and a girl, probably in their last year of school were taking up as much of the pavement as possible. They were walking straight towards us, and one of the lads shouts out (as he knocks into some chap) "if anyone bumps into me again I'll go mad". The other lad was walking straight towards me, I had no where to move to. I stop dead in front of him, he tells me to move, I direct him to the other side of me. Clearly shocked that a man would stand up to a teenage boy, he moved, mouthing off as he went.

The missus hates confrontation and I felt her grab my arm to pull me away, but there really was no need for it. People like this assuming because they're agressive that people will shy away. I could have very easily headbutted him right across the nose, one day perhaps someone will.

i'm always getting walked into, it's like i'm invisible to most people :( sometimes i end up dancing with people on the street.

I havn't had a problem like this on foot in the car however the amount of people in the damn fast lane going about 50 that won't move until I flash my lights or use the horn **** me off

Yeah I had this 30 stone fat guy who was taking up the hole pavement just bounce into me ,well I bounced and he stood still :D
I had a few choice words for him !
I found the problem much worse in inner london and got so fed up on my last visit there I adopted the stiff shoulder approach and soon found every one moved
out of my way !
Its more civilised down here and most people make a mutual effort to avoid a collision !

I get this all the time, I always make an effort to let people pass easily yet hardly ever get the same response from the incoming traffic.
The most irritating experiance of this was in M&S (which im sure deliberatly make the isles twice as narrow as most other shops) where I had a fairly plump lady coming towards me.
I moved right over to one side practically knocking stuff of the shelves and she still managed to walk right into me and almost knocked me over, before turning around and telling me to watch where i was going....Barbarians.
