i wouldn't like to say 100% you could do that with no problem, but i have before now done that, having said that i didn't have to worry about loosing important data.
its hard to say what is the right thing to do as i cant see the setup, if you have 4 drives and they were all connected in order 0,1,2,3 and the perc card saw them in that order, you'd see which number is down. but im taking it you tried all the obvious?
Isn't it just as easy to look at the cabling, I'm assuming your using a break out cable, and its plugged into port 1 instead of 0 which is why the disks at 4,5,6,7 instead of 0,1,2,3?
So failed disk 6 would be cable 3? Or am I missing the point?
After some heavy activity.. Feel which drive is significantly colder than the rest, and if you're able, touch the drives during activity (use a screwdriver to help hear if needed) as the failed one should be the only one not hammering away.
