Just as I was getting stuck into Forza :p

Screen made an odd noise and just turned off, now when I boot up the 360 its showing 3 flashing lights. The one not flashing is the top right (console is up on its side).

Time for a new one or is it something else?

Yep, those 3 red lights flashing means "hardware failure" - happened to mine 6 months after purchasing.

Take it back to the place it was originally bought from and they will swap it for a new one. Or send it back to Microsoft and wait a while for them to repair it!

Exact same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago, weird noise then crash when I was watching a film. Turned it back on and 3 red lights.

Ah well. I've probably used the thing for about 6 hours of gaming, and about 300 hours of watching movies/TV shows since christmas 2005. :p

Once they go, do they not turn on?

As I just turned mine on and managed to get a few mins of PGR3 before it wen again....

No, quite often they work again for a period before dying completely, or so I have read in other threads about this.

Have they ever found what is the cause of this?

Apparently it's due to heat inside the case which causes the motherboard to warp slightly. When the board warps the solder contacts on the GPU aren't as good as they should be.

There's a few possible fixes such as the X clamp replacement (you'll find details if you Google it) but if the 360 is still in warranty it's best to just get it replaced. If it's out of warranty the X clamp replacement is well worth trying though.

Also try starting it up without the HDD and extra peripherals attached and see if that cures the problem? Then switch off and connect it back again.

I dont have the reciept for when I bought the 360 but I did use a loyalty card thing with the shop.

It could be on their system that I did by it maybe?
If not what are my choices as I cant remember when I bought it.

my mate bought an x360 from that auction website which had this problem. he bought it knowing it was broke for like £50. it would boot properly, but would shut down after 1 or 2 mins, and get red bars after. it was out of warrenty, so he drilled some holes in the case and mounted an old fan with some glue to the inside of the case, and voila, it worked again. lucky him :( .

thats another idea for you all out there...
