I've got an Windows XP PC set up to play some old games. I'm interested in games from 2000-2005 and most play fine. But when I try to play Insane (or 1nsane, if you're "2kool4skool") I get about 40- 20fps, with dips occurring there is a lot of action going on on screen, as if the GPU was struggling.

It is a DirectX 7 game from 2000 so It's got to be a compatibility issue rather than performance issue! Any idea what could be causing the low framerate? Was XP bad with old games?

No idea of a fix, but 1nsane (isn't that what it was officially called?) was awesome! Though I'm sure any open world game seemed great back then lol. I'm not sure i'd fancy playing it now, as I suspect the world is pretty boring by todays standard... lots of cloned trees and similar looking textures.

I was right! And "checkpoint" get's annoying pretty quickly!

It has several (20?) open worlds about 2km x 2km. They're pretty bare but have nice terrain for 'fast off roading' (rather than the very slow kind like Spintires). The physics are impressive too- the suspension and bouncing and the flag waving around based on how you're driving during Capture the flag... Not to mention the damage system with wing mirrors coming off when you rolled. And first person view... Cracking game. Especially at more than 20fps :(!

Listed at GOG.

Trawling through the forum, somebody mentioned "In the game select HAL T&L and choose highest detailsettings not auto."

No idea if that will work or not, you never know.
