I'm thinking of upgrading from my 17"(1280x1024) and 8800GTS 320mb to a 20"(1680x1050) monitor and a 4850 Extreme 512mb.

Will i still get a fairly decent enough performance increase buying the 4850, enough to run on high on farcry2 and maxed on cod4 and wic, or should i be spending any more on a gfx? (possibly up to £150 if i'm feeling like it) Just to add, I'm running XP.

I just did a similar upgrade, from a 8800gt 512 to the Sapphire Toxic 4850 512mb and i find it performs better. My 8800 ran WIC and COD4 fine, but the drivers were buggy with Vista and i just got fed up with it and switched. I get better performance with the 4850 (i can now run dx10 in crysis/stalker CS). The 4850 can easily run COD4 on max at 60fps mine does that easily..

I would say get a 4870 but you have the same problem i did, about £150. i think the cheapest 4870 is £200, but you can pick up a4850 with custom cooler for about 120 and OC.

I dont know what Far Cry 2 will need, im sure someone can fill you in on that one, though its being done for consoles so will it need that much?

Yeah I wouldn't put any money on anything but the real top end graphics cards being able to run Farcry 2 at anything near max if it's anything like farcry which at the time stretched hardware about the same as Crisis did at launch i.e. beyond what anything available at the time could run well.

 Consoles can run Far Cry 2, so it's hardly going to stress out top end PC hardware. It WONT be as stressing as Crysis, and you can bet on that.
Same with COD5 and any other future games that are also on consoles. The days that really stress PC hardware are fading away, too much stuff is cross platform now.

Crysis is a rare exception that was made specifically for PC hardware, just like the first FarCry... which is why they are/were so demanding. Are we seeing a pattern here?
Until the next gen consoles start getting near we wont really see a big improvement in graphics. Even ID software have started doing cross platform now when they had always stuck to PC.
