Performance vs price opinions

Ok first up not looking at a fan boy war here but want some opinions on the 2 current top of the range cards.

I am looking at a new rig build which up until recently was going to be Ryzen 5950 based but the the release of the Intel Core i9-12900K has made me reconsider the CPU choice as the AM4 platform is ageing.

So taking the CPU choice out of the equation for now I turned to GFX cards and have a bit of a dilemma. Other than buying a RTX3090 FE which are a bit thin on the ground the difference in price between the RX6900XT and one of the RTX 3090 AIB's is around £600 or 50% more. My question is does the extra performance of the 3090 really justify that price difference?

I have read benchmarks and reviews of both cards and can only see small differences but I realise these benchmarks are never "real world". I have seen a few people on the forum have both cards or have had both and wanted to get some insight.

I have pretty much always used Nvidia cards in the past but have no particular loyalty to any of the manufacturers I just want to get the most bang for my buck so to speak.

So please give me some comments and help me decide.

I would say no - Check out benchmarks of the two, and only you can answer how important that difference is. Do you game at 4k? 144hz? Don't forget size of GPU too, it seems the 3090 is a bit of a beast. If the two were the same price, you have a tougher question, but I'd say that if the 6900 is that much cheaper, definitely that one.

Unless you have professional reasons for needing the extra 8GB of vRAM, you won't miss it. There's a thread or two on here regarding vRAM issues, long story is short is don't worry about it, especially with these two. Get the RX6900, be delighted, game on.

No the 3090 is not worth £600 more than the 6900XT for gaming, you are not getting 'bang for buck' if you go that route.
I wouldn't pay £1200 for a 6900XT either, but it's the better option of the two.

The 6900XT is generally the faster card (game specific obviously). However the AMD Ray tracing implementation is nowhere near as good as Nvidia.

I had the option of going 6900XT or 3080Ti, I went 3080 Ti, the faster raster of the 6900xt isn't much noticeable and by the time it's a real big issue both cards will be struggling. Got the benefit of DLSS and better ray tracing on the 3080 Ti too.

pure rasterisation performance the 3090 is still ahead (even if mere 2,3%, specially at 4k), either way no, the 3090 is absolutely not worth the extra money.
