Any way to get my MacBook to recognise it's connected to a phone hotspot and using a data connection rather than a wifi connection so as not to download updates automatically when it connects?

Don't mind it doing it automatically when I'm on wifi, but sometimes forget when it connects to my phone and I can just see the glee with a 4G network speed... Rapidly uses up a month's data!

Or do I just have to turn off auto update and remember to update manually?

They should find a way of automatically detecting this... they implemented something to stop massive data usage when using the wifi assist function and this is a similar scenario (albeit switched over)
