I've just ordered a personalised number plate from the DVLA site but I'm a bit puzzled as to what to do next. I mean I've been assigned the reg I wanted and it said I will get the certificate in 2 weeks but once I've got that what next? Can I change my tax registration online or do I need to phone up? What happens to the old number plate? Do I still have the rights to that? So when I go to sell it how do I keep my new plate and put the old one back on?

Thanks

Get plates made
You lose the old plates
When you want to keep new plate for another car you pay to put it on retention and DVLA assign your car another plate, normally the original one again
VED info should automatically update

When you come to sell your car you get your plates put on retention and the dvla will issue a number plate for your car, sometimes this will be your original plate but cannot be guaranteed.

Both times i have taken my private plate off cars, i have had the same original number go back on. Keep your original plates somewhere just in case you do get the same number back, saves you paying for new plates later.

Sorry for the bump but thought it's about the same thing

I'm buying a used car next week and thinking about buying a personal plate to put on it.

Can I buy the plate say today for example from dvla and have it ready to put on the car for when I insure it ? Rather not pay the extra £30 odd admin fee to insurers for the policy change.

Do I have to wait for the dvla certificate to arrive first or can it be done before this arrives ?

Thanks.

I removed my private plate from my bm. It got assigned the previous private plate that was on when I bought it. I thought it would have been assigned the one original to the car.

Only if the previous owner of the plate transferred away that private plate or retained it.
