Thread inspired by this article they I've just read on the train.

https://www.theguardian.com/money/s...g-trend-personalised-number-plates-motorists?

I'm neither up nor down with people who have one, although I do think the ones that attempt to spell words with numbers are totally pathetic. However, reading the comments section of that article it's just full of rage and snobbery. Apparently, it's only over-reaching builders and plumbers who waste their money on them. :p

It's comical to see the wannabe affluent get into a frenzy of jealousy and moral high ground when they realise that those who are beneath them might actually not be after all.

Interested in your thoughts, and extra points to the best comments made from registration numbers.

I was asked to sell my N1PEL plate by a page 3 girl, years ago, but she baulked when I asked to see here credentials. I'd probably be on a charge for such a question these days.... :(

This from the comments, it's like you're not allowed to spend a couple of hundred quid because food banks exist. It's such a stupid point to make.

There's a BMW round our way with the plates "GI J00".

You can see what he/she was going for, but to me it sounds like a guy with a gun, a prayer shawl and a skull cap.

Two personalised plates I have seen in real life and genuinely admired: PEN 15 and C13 NMR. The first is obvious and the second is a stroke of genius if you're into analytical chemistry.

One that makes me laugh is my ex-wife's new plate that consists of her initials, 04 and her new hubby's initials, e.g. AB04 BOB. It's so twee that it makes me giggle every time I see it. It may also be because I know what she's really like and know that it's the image she wants to present to the world but she's not a very nice person in reality. BTW, that last comment was from my solicitor. :D

Why should someone care whether someone has a private plate or not?

Although I'm a snob when I see a basic car with one :D I guess that's the point.. adding a touch of personality

Mines my first name, then the first letters of my middle and last names. Shame my name is not that popular as im sure if it was it'd be worth quite a bit. I googled plates the first day I passed my test, although couldn't afford the 600 odd quid it was. Waited a few years and when I was in a better financial position I brought it.

Im on the fence whether its sad or tacky etc, but I like it so I don't really care.

I thought the increase was to do with folk not wanting to disclose how old their car was by hiding it with a plate, now that we're all so obsessed by not having last years car, darling.

Not bothered by them personally. Usually better if they match the car, rather than just your intials which will mean nothing to anyone else. Also, can be a useful tool for identifying bellends. If I see a SUV or pickup truck with a plate attempting to spell "Boss", "Sexy" or "Cash", or adorned with "X"s, I know to give it a wide berth.

I did try with mine but it only lasted for 6 months. :p
