I got a new Tom Tom one yesterday, and have hacked the startup and standby screens.

Just open and change the 2 bitmaps in the root folder.

Startup.

Shutdown.

Because, if someone apart from me has the unit, it is most probably stolen. At least the thief will have to have a PC to erase the info before offering it to someone in a pub. Plus it is a wee bit more secure than a label that can be pealed off.

good idea as chances are a thief will steal and sell without checking it out, however, why would someone that has just spent their cash on a cheap tomtom want to phone you?

Mention a reward in the shutdown and you would be more likely to get a response.

I thought about adding the reward thing, but in this day and age if it was nicked, I would never see it again regardless.

then why put that message on :p

You may as well put a message saying "This Tom Tom has been reported stolen, we are tracking this via GPS. Please phone ******** asap if you did not steal it"

:D

Scare them into phoning you

I have never looked into them and didnt kow you could edit them, im sure the majority of peopel didnt and thus would think the above message was authentic.

The only problem I'd have with that is everytime you give someone a lift and shut the TomTom down in front of them it looks like you are a thieving get! :p

Any links to sites that have tomtom start up screens to download . . . . ?

It's easy enough to make your own. Just take any image, resize it to 320x240 then you need to rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and save it as "splash.bmp". Then make sure you have a backup of the original "splash.bmp" on the tomtom before copying your new one over the top of it.
