It struck me that the most complicated and off putting aspect of this mod is the cutting and finishing of the perspex. Subsequently I have found this lot (www.ponoko.com) who have had pretty good write ups from Wired Mag, New York Times and the BBC. Basically what you do is design a template using the software on their site and then upload it to them. They then use a laser cutter to cut your template into your chosen material. In this case perspex.

I'm quite keen to have a go at doing a similar mod on my 22" at home altho I might try it out on a cheap 17" first. Still seems like an interesting way to create what otherwise would require some half decent machining skills. I haven't had a play with the software yet but judging from the stuff they are selling from their online shop it's pretty versatile.

I dont get it... why have a Red LED light all the way round edge of your screen?
Granted it looks pretty but it will be annoying as hell surely?

well, i've got a warm-white flourescent tube glued to the back of my monitor, it looks great, allows my to type with all the other lights in the room off (well, if i need to look at the keyboard...) and reduces eyestrain. i can't imagine this being any worse/different, while also looking awesome!

Oh yes sure I know that works a treat! Saw some pics of peoples setups on here and a lot of peeps have some sort of light mounted behind their monitor to give better ambient light and reduce eyestrain.

But as we all know, LED lights are quite powerful and I remember with the DGM monitor that the blue power LED was quite bright and had to shield it/block it.

With this Red LED around the monitor doesnt that just make it even more annoying? I mean I dont think it is meant to be an "ambient light source" so to speak?

I doesn't look like it would cause any real issues - it's not a particularly intense light. Still each to their own.

Oh yes absolutely. As you say, each to there own, just stating my own point of view ;)

I did see all those fancy ambient light TV panels produced by Philips etc which make it more soothing to watch TV, but I felt this LED incarnation was a bit too "intense" in comparison? (not sure if thats the best choice of word heh :p)

I'm sure with a little bit of current regulation you can dim the LED to a pleasant glow. Either way front on the effect seems less 'in your face'.

I'd prefer not too see it, looks good for observers, but when using the PC/gaming it isn't in your face and annoying.
