Persuade my missus NOT to buy a Nissan Pixo

My good lady is looking for a new car. She is self employed and does a lot of short trips round town, with occasional trips on the motorway.

She is looking for something small, economical and reliable, with low / zero road tax. She has seen one of these 'cars' and has decided she wants one.

I am trying to persuade her that for £7k, she would be much better off buying something second hand, like a Polo Bluemotion or something along these lines. I would also feel far happier if she was driving round in something that does not look like it would crumple with the slightest impact.

Please help me persuade her that this is the better option. Links to any cars would be appreciated as well. She will read this later when we get back from the Nissan garage.

Thanks. :)

Just do some sums. Show her how long it takes for the zero road tax to pay the price difference between it and a used car with say £100 road tax.

Don't bother trying to dissuade her. She's a woman, who probably doesn't like cars, so doesn't think about them rationally and she can't see past the sticker price for a new car and the idea of cheap tax.

She won't thank you for trying to dissuade her, just leave her to it IMO.

Pixo is for non car people just like your mrs.

If she wants a new car, then the Pixo's not brilliant. The Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai i10 or Fiat Panda are much better bets. All available for a similar amount of money too, especially if you get one from an online broker - and they're all certainly better cars and much easier to live with.

Many of them have higher equipment levels too.

Kia Picanto's not a bad bet either.

Most have better warranties and stronger resale values as well, plus they feel like proper 'cars' as opposed to a matchbox toy of some kind.

Let her buy what she wants. If she keeps it for the full duration of the 5/7 year warranty that most small cars come with these days then she will get her moneys worth.

Pugueot have some cracking deals on the 107's at the moment.

Wasn't the Pixo the car featured on Top Gear, where they saw what used car they could get for the same amount of money? Even though the cars they picked obviously wouldn't have been suitable for your missus, there WILL be something that will be.

I'd show her the cars Lashout has suggested and see what she thinks. Just keep point out she can get MORE car for LESS money and it'll still do the job she wants :)

What ever you suggest as soon as it breaks down or she bumps into something it'll be your fault, if she's dead set them is it really worth the hassle, if she buys the extended warranty that's 5 years of worry free motoring.

Mate bought one and to be fair it's not that bad, he's done nearly 20k in it already and I've been in it loads, it's not great but it's not terrible really.

Be grateful she doesn't want a TT or a Pug CC or something else approaching £20k like my mates wife, I understand the £7k ones you can pick up for £5.5-6k if you hit the dealer at the right time.

yeah but if she's sat in one and not thought "OMG this feels horrible and cheap and tacky"

He's wasting his time. He's already said that he's trying to persuade her and he's not winning the argument.

If she can't see it (as plenty of non car people can't) you can't force them to.

Nissan Pixo is not really a Nissan, it's an OEM Indian car called Maruti Astar, otherwise found around the world badged as Suzuki Alto or Celerio, Changhe Alto and now Nissan Pixo. As Maruti badge is removed and Nissan badge glued in, during that process the car becomes overpriced by about £2500, for what it really is under the new plastic grille.

Among cars it's an equivalent of white box Tesco Value cookies with blob of orange coloured sugary gelatine on top passing for Jaffa Cakes.

None of its reincarnations ever received truly positive writeup in motoring press. Even being the cheapest car in UK (on paper, RRP price only), couldn't convince journalists to rave about it.

Thanks for the responses, which she has read.

We went to see a Pixo today and she still quite liked it. Luckily there is a VW dealer next door so I got her to sit in a new Polo. She does not want the Pixo anymore (thank god).

As usual, the sales guy in VW has offered her a 3 year finance deal which looks good on paper but I think she might be better off sticking to a new small car or possible a second hand Polo, which fall into the original budget.

Thanks for ideas for alternative, Lashout. We are currently looking at the reviews though she is quite set on getting a Polo now! Quite like the Chevrolet for the price it seems far better for the money than the Pixo!

I will let you know what we get as she is going to get one, or at least order one, this week.
