Does anyone know anything about PestTrap?

Sometime yesterday, a new Icon appeared on my decktop - a shield, entitled Online Security Guide.

When switching on this morning, I saw a new ICON in the bottom right corner, yellow triangle with exclamation mark, which periodically flashes up a message saying my computer is infected with Spyware. It seems that I have something called PestTrap running. It certainly looks plausable, but then so do many scams.

I've done a full system scan with my virus checking software (McAffee), and nothing has been found. Ad-Aware had not found anything untoward, and neither has Spybot Search and Destroy.

A Google search suggests that PestTrap is indeed malicious, and there are numerous links to sites which claim to get rid of it. However, are these themselves traps?

Has anyone here experienced PestTrap, and if so, have you any recommedations for dealing with it?
 
I was unable to use Add/Remove Programsto remove it, as PestTrap was not listed.

I've now run HijackThis, and here is my log file. Any help with what shouldn't be there, and how to get rid of it, would be much appreciated.

Since I've had no feedback since posting my HijackThis log earlier today, I've tried to follow some of the advice given by AJUK.

First, I tried pestpatrol. This offered a free download for temporary use. However, the download, which indeed claimed to be a free trial, required me to enter the key which I'd received when purchasing it. It appears that they are linking to the fully purchased version rather than to the free trial version.

I then moved to the other recommended program, ewido. This was more successful. It wouldn't work on either Opera or Firefox, but it did work on IE6. A full scan using ewido incovered 228 mailcious entries, which I then deleted.

Following a further reboot, all was well.

That is, until half way through my typing the last paragraph of this post. PestTrap is still active.

I really would appreciate any help in overcoming this problem.

Just had a quick look before going out for the day. Following instructions to the letter is something I'm quite used to, so tomorrow when I've got time I'll do exactly what's been suggested.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've now managed to complete full set of processes suggested by The_KiD, it's been going since 10 o'clock this morning.

Following the running of the SMitRem tool, the three scans discovered and fixed a total of 10 problems. ewido found four tracking cookies in mozilla, and spybot found three registrt entries and three tracking cookies in firefox.

Assuming that last HJT listing proves successful, I have one further question relating to what I've done today.

After downloading and installing AVG and ewido, I now appear to have them running permanently. If this gives me added protection, then I'll be pleased. But is there going to be any problem caused by these two running, along with my usual virus scan and firewall provided by McAfee? I realise that ewido is only on a 14 day trial, so presumably that will stop within two weeks.
 
Thanks for all the help. Everything seems to be going just fine now. And thanks for the advice on which to keep. I'm quite impressed with AVG and with Ewido. I'm glad to hear that I can keep Ewido after the 14 day trial period; I'd expected it to be deactivated.
