Hi everyone, The Hector and Maui Dolphins will become extinct within a generation (here in New Zealand), unless something is done. I ask you to please sign the petition (below) to hopefully make a difference. It will be sent to our Prime Minister Helen Clarke. These little dolphins live only around New Zealand and are very special, thank-you !

Lemonique

There's only 111 Maui Dolphins left. I've signed and haope others here might to. Also mail to anyone who might be interested in signing. Thanks.

A petition is going to make no difference. Sorry.

The yangtze river dolphin is now Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) since no one has been able to find any for around 6 years.

Dont petitions do like, jack all?

Fair play to you m8 trying to raise awareness like but..

Think the Chinese Army shot the last one because it was causing a problem with building a damn i.e. attracting the attention of conservationists etc :(

Thanks for signing people. And yes we don't know how effective this petition wil be but for the 30 or so seconds it will take to sign it has to be worth doing.

Signed. I don't think it will make much difference mind you, I don't think we will have the power to stop the way other countries fish. Which is a shame, considering how clever dolphins appear to be, Any creature for that matter shouldn't be wiped out, except maybe humans, we kinda deserve to be lol.

personally, dolphins, i can take them or leave them :)

No offence mate, but thats a **** attitude to have.

Can someone explain to me exactly why it matters if a species becomes extinct?

Millions of species have become extinct since the dawn of the Earth. Those that don't adapt to their environment die out, those that do thrive.

Sure the environment may be changing due to people, but if some species die out because of it why is this necessarily a bad thing?
There will still be species that thrive and these will be the successful species for the future.
Nature will find a way to keep things in balance and short of not being able to see something in a zoo or feeling bad becuase it has died out what difference does it make to the grand scheme of things?

What if you where in a world of superior beings, would you want some sort of protection muppet?

If we protect dolphins then we have no hope of natural selection creating super dolphins with razor sharp teeth and incredible intelligence

I for one consider this a bad thing

maybe the problem is not nature, it's us. Thats "why it matters."

The fact is we could stop this happening, we don't.

We are the only species that is capable of understanding the world, who can affect the globe, who can decide what to do. Surely this "gift" means we should be responsible and at least try not to destroy species?

But the world now is a world with humans, and anything that isn't adept at surviving in this environment will become extinct.
Why should we try and save them? IMHO doing this is interfering with nature rather than letting natural selection take its course.
