Looking to spend £250ish on a relatively decent petrol self propelled lawn mower, anyone have any recommendations apart from the few from Argos that I've seen and not so sure about. :S

Mine's a red lawnchief I've had for years. Small garden but you can't beat a petrol mower for making it fun. I love pulling the cord a couple of times and hearing it start up.

IIRC mountfield mowers are meant to be good (I think they usually use a Briggs & Stratton or Honda engine).

I can't remember the make of our mower, other than it's got a Briggs & Stratton engine in it :)

One thing you need to remember with the petrol mowers is to change the oil (and check it like a car engine).

I'll move this to home and garden.

Honda if its in budget. I got mine brand new (last seasons model so discounted) 6 years ago. It's self propelled and makes mincemeat of my garden. Even after 6 months of non-use over the Winter, it starts on the 2nd pull every time and never fails.

It seems about £100 over your budget.... Worth it though. Buy cheap, buy twice. I know someone who's Honda mower is now on its 19th year without fail.

I've got a lawnking with a 148cc (I think) briggs and stratton engine, it's been faultless so far, cuts well and picks up fine, it will stall if you hit long grass when the bag is full, but it's stopped picking up grass by then anyway.

This was less than £200 from a charlies store, some kind of sale was on. Pretty much this one, but with a solid grass collector.

+1

I know people who have Honda mowers over 20 years old & still working perfectly.
BUT, if funds are available, then Honda would be my first choice.

McCulloch M46-500CDR Self-Propelled has Brigg & Stratton engine, self propelled, has roller for stripey effect £289.

If you can beg/borrow/steal something to tide you over the summer then places like B&Q discount them heavily come September as they don't want to carry the stock over the winter.

My Honda mower is 7 years old now and starts 2nd pull each and every time I use it (even when stood for months over the winter). Well recommended over the cheap rubbish you can buy.

I'd go Honda if buying new..

Second hand I would buy a mountfield with Briggs and stratton engine. I got lasts years model for £45 of the bay needed a new pull cord fitted maybe a 10min job. Mount fields are cheap on the bay.

If you want a golf course looking garden then nothing is better than an Atco you can even get a little seat for them to add weight to the roller.

Got a McCulloch M40-450C from Argos for £160 at the weekend. 148cc B&S engine, it replaced an electric Flymo and needless to say I am so far delighted. No stupid cables across my lawn and about twice as fast to get the job done compared to the Flymo. It starts to complain when it hits the very long stuff on low height settings but nothing compared to the Flymo and cuts at first attempt, rather than me having to push and pull it over the same spot ten times :D.

Only downside being now I want a petrol strimmer :).

With your budget it sounds like you're into the world of self-propelled and more powerful engines?

Honda, or Hayter if you're on a budget. Look for a self propelled one unless you feel you need lots of exercise. Electric start is nice, but probably not on a budget.

Basically solid aluminium bodies, avoid the cheap thin steel ones. Go to a proper machinery dealer and get advice, avoid B&Q and Argos and the like.

just push though, propelled are a waste of time and money imo.

See, I'd disagree with that, maybe I'm just lazy but I find self propelled takes most of the effort out of the whole job. Plus it you're going along a hedge you can just walk alongside the mower with a hand on the lever rather than getting up and close with the hedge.

Fully agree with his. Didn't even really consider it until I bought mine and now would have to have it on any new mowers.

Regularly use it exactly as you suggest :D

Well I use to have a B&Q self propelled mower, and it was good, or so I thought at the time. Was £100 quid so thought it would last me a few years. I got 3 years out of it before it blew the crank. Was serviced too.

I've now bought a Viking MB248, it's made by Sthil and has a briggs & stratton engine and is infinitely better, real nice cut, doesn't have roller on the back but didn't need that, and with it being a push one it's lighter so the wife can use, more to the point she can even start it!! And comes with a 5 year warranty so long as serviced once a year. Cost me £219 from local lawn mower place.

if you have a big lawn
get the most powerful one you can afford (hp) and a good cut width

ps for gods sake get one that is self propelled, rotary best value
all those wasted hours with a poxy flymow type!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've also got a Honda Izy self propelled - it makes cutting the grass so much easier.

Make sure you keep the blade nice and sharp so it cuts the grass instead of bludgeoning it ;)
