I have had many pets in my life, and have just lost a cat who was run over last week. Although I have had many pets die over the years, the loss of this one has affected me quite badly for some reason, maybe because he was killed rather than living out his life naturally. I'm not ashamed to admit was in tears when he died.
What is it about humans that make us want to share our lives with other species, with all the joy and eventual pain that it brings?

(animal haters need not apply :p )

Because animal breeding HAS and WILL always happen,

What will happen if we stopped caring, and didn't want some companion? the animals will be left without homes...And we wont be able to share our lives with these amazing animals.

You will probably find that your pets will be more loyal that some of your best friends.

Because the good outweighs the bad. I know how bad the grief is when a pet dies, people who have never owned a pet don't seem to understand just how upsetting it is to lose them.

They are a joy to own, bring calm/love, give some great moments and unlike humans don't talk back. The downside is death as they do become part of the family and the grieving process can be hard.

I love animals, and give them the right attention and care back and they will love you twice as much back. My dog always comes and wakes me up in the morning when the mother and sister leave the house, I wake up to her lying on my bed next to me getting snug. :)
