Well, a few weeks ago I was harping on about a diesel hot-hatch thinking that it was a really good diea. However thanks to some knowledgeable chaps around here I realise it wouldn't really be suited to my needs. With this in mind I started to stick to good old petrol as a focus for my search for a new hatch. After lots of reading up I have kind of fallen for the Peugeot 106 GTI... good looks (ie: not a Saxo), screaming performance (like the Saxo VTS but a bit faster, right?), awesome handling, and from all reports it's very reliable if tended to regularly.

Just wondered if anyone who has experience with them has any comments about this car... positives... minuses... and things to look out for?

:)

Fantastic little car, the smile will never be wiped from your face.

I had one in black with 70,000 on the clock, it had however been looked after badly by the previous owner and I had problems every which way I turned which I why I got rid of.

I would advise getting a low mileage one if poss or one that has a good service history.

You won't regret buying one if its been well looked after!

Heh cool, i'm hoping to find a black one and lower it a bit, stick on some angel-eye headlights, possibly a nicer exhaust, and some nice alloys. As tasteful and discrete as possible, of course. :o

Is there potential for tuning on these things then after a few months oif getting used to it?

Oh, and how much should I be looking to pay? :)

Couple of things..

1) Do not buy a black one. Peugeot paint is not exactly brilliant and a black one WILL look shabby and when the sun comes out and shines on it, it will be a haze of complete mess and swirl marks. It'll really disappoint you. They look great when wet, but thats about it. Go for a lighter colour.

2) It is not a BMW so Angel Eyes will simply look daft. Keep it subtle and you'll have a decent looking fun to drive hot hatch. Perhaps a set of multispokes or something.

Curious you say good looks and then 'not a Saxo' - they both look as near as makes no difference the same.

Oh boy, don't touch it, its perfect as it is! If you are just don't do anything to ruin the already perfect handling.

The 106 GTi is a cracking little hatch (and im not even a huge fan of small hatches). In terms of drive and handling they are great. The things i really dont like is that the pedals on them are so close together......im sure i would get used to it...but for a start i mash more than one :(

Next months evo has a test thing on the best FWD cars. The 106 i am certain will be in it......might be worth a read. Im not always a fan of there views but they will have it upside a lot of other FWD metal so it would be good to see how it compares

I also agree with the lads above.....its nice looking motor already so if anything.....may change the alloys.....but thats really it. a nice stock one is always the best way

I would agree about the close pedals, but you do eventually get used to them.

I'd say that's completely down to opinion then mate, as to me they look nothing alike besides both being small (and other obvious traits). My area is full of Saxos... I prefer the look of the Peug by a long way from a style point of view!

I prefer the looks of the 106 although i chose a Saxo VTS cause a new one was 3.5k cheaper than a 106 when I got it.

If you do buy one, make sure it is totally standard bar stereo as you relly need to get an unmolested example to make sure its gonna be a good runner.

Ive had one for 3 years or so now and put 60k+ on it, Its been fairly reliable although the clutch cable did snap a couple of days ago (gf driving so I blame her :p). The clutch cable is probably one of the worst jobs to do on them.

The build quality/finish is typicaly French, so it will rattle, the ride comfort isnt amazing and its not great for motorway cruising, 80mph is about 4000rpm in 5th.

They do suffer from ABS problems, usually sensors going and almost all suffer from a lumpy idle at times, although this doesnt really affect the car.

They are great fun to drive and pretty quick for 1.6tho, i'll do a proper post later when im not at work.

They are the same car though, how can you not think they look similar?

Oh and for the record, the 106 GTI is no faster.

Isn't the rear end diffecult to lower on a 106/saxo? I'm sure my friend said it was a lot of work to get her saxo sitting right. Also don't get a 106 if you've got big feet another friend of mine has a quicksilver and as said earlier the pedal area is tiny.

Complete rumour. The rear isn't quite as easy as say fitting springs, but its doable at home with basic tools, and so long as you have a good eye, you can get the rear lowered just fine (not that I bothered).

As for the pedal area, the only real problem is getting used to the fact that they are offset (not directly central to the seat). I have size 12 feet, and could drive just fine in my wide vans. So no, having large feet isn't an issue either, if people say it is, its just because they can't drive.

I found the pedal area annoyingly small but then I've only driven it a few times and I'm used to a golf which is massive in comparison.

As for the rear end I've only got my friends word on it and she is a girlie girl after all so probably doesn't know what shes talking about, I doubt she could change a tyre to be honest.

Agree'd, im size 11 and can also drive in my Sidi bike boots without trouble.

I found the pedals ok, have driven much worse cars with offset pedals.

Drove nicely, wasnt as quick as I was expecting but still wasn't exactly slow :)

What, you mean obvious traits such as both being the same car pretty much?

Don't change the wheels. Don't change anything. Maybe a stainless steel exhaust system if that's what you're into.

Changing the wheels will compromise the handling, which is essentially what makes the car so great.
