Peugeot 107 - Light Tapping from Engine

I think all cars tap from cold, my girlfriends '07 Focus, my car is noisy as hell when cold.

Is it a new noise? or one you've just noticed? As it's such a new car you could take it back and get them to check it out.

The little 3 cylinder just sounds "Characterful" (rough) all the time in my experience. We have a 2011 car that's the same. So long as it's not something that's a proper loud rattle etc I wouldn't worry

A lot of modern petrol engines can be quite tappy on idle. My Focus has always been a bit tappy when cold but the noise disappears under load and I haven't used a drop of oil in 9,000 miles so it must be fine...

Fairly normal for the 107/C1/Aygo for this to happen. Loads of threads on it over on http://www.c1oc.co.uk/

Type of oil used can have an influence on noise from the 1KR engine but in reality the old adage 'They all do that, guv' really does apply in most cases. Other reasons for ticking, tapping etc can be caused by the VVTi system and the water pump. Water pump is easy to check for - just slip the belt off the pully and start the car from cold (obviously don't run it for too long) to see if its that. New one usually cures it. If it's a 2013 car though, it'll still be under warranty so for peace of mind I'd have it looked at by the supplying dealer. And if it does indeed vanish after 5 mins or so then it's nothing to be concerned about. The wife's little 2006 107 with 22k miles on the clock has done this since we got it a couple of years ago.

If you aren't already a member over on C1oc then its worth signing up for, loads of info over there on these quirky little cars. :)

Mine is noisey when cold and have a feeling its the waterpump with it being a 56 plate and old style pump, i didn't know i could just slip the belt off so cheers for the info :)

Yep - and while the belt is off and the engine is switched off, its fairly easy to spin either the alternator or the waterpump by hand and see if you can hear any unusual noises which may indicate issues.

The noise is inline with one of the pistons though, which is what worries me. I am a member on C1OC and a guy has just provided me with a recording of his when he had Piston Slapping. He recorded at 1200 miles, by 6000 miles it sounded like a diesel cold.

I will look in to it more.

Thanks

that's interesting... so the waterpumps on these lumps are driven by the aux belt??

I'm pretty sure the the Toyota 1KR-FE engine is made by Toyota?

The 1KR powerplants are designed by Daihatsu which is a subsidiary of Toyota. The petrol variants are assembled in Japan and Poland although I'm unsure by which of the two companies. Most probably by Toyota at the Takaoka plant.

The waterpumps on these are belt driven, yes. :)
