Hey fellas,

So the mrs pug is playing up..

About 6 months ago the clutch totally went...

Driving along, then pressing clutch pedal down there would be a bit of a click/bang/knock and it basically wouldn't disengage the gears or reengage them again. So drove it to garage (just basically matching the revs and slotted the gears in) and they said the clutch was gone and replaced it.

Car was fine but now, 6 months later, its started again.. done it twice in last week.

Now if we take it back to garage they say they will charge a couple hundred to take it all apart and investigate. Which I don't really want to do..

Im not bad with cars, done brakes, bushes etc on my bmw but obviously a clutch is a little bit different..

I reckon it could be like the clutch cable or something? but wouldn't know where to start with replacing it or even if its something i could do?

Cant find any guides or anything on net.. any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I can't really see it being the clutch itself if it's only doing it intermittently, is it hydraulic or is it cable operated? If it's cable is it self adjusting? If so I would guess this is more likely to be the problem. If the self adjuster is slipping, your foot will go to the floor without disengaging the clutch.

Why would they charge to take it apart again? If it’s the same part failed again it would be under warranty or have you done more than 12,000 miles?

Sounds very much like the cable has either snapped or become detached from the pedal or clutch operating arm or self adjuster is broken. Is the pedal still up in the air is has it fallen to the floor? If it's still up is there any resistance when you push it down?

Yeah I would agree.. Shes not the best of drivers but even she would struggle bricking a new clutch in 6 months!

I dont know whether its hydraulic or cable operated.. I would have thought cable.. but dont know. Is there a way I can check?

The Garage say, because its clearly not the clutch that gone again, they would need to take it all out and apart to see whats at fault.. which is chargeable. Personally, I never liked this garage but the mrs dad insisted it went there (you know what there like).

Yeah this is what I'm thinking, but that's where my knowledge ends pretty much..

The pedal stays in the air and will come back up after pushed down.

When you push it down, there is the normal amount of resistance until pushed about 2 thirds of the way, when it will make the strange click/bang/knock, which feels to me as if the pedal slips off what ever it was being given its resistance from, and will go straight down to the floor without disengaging the gear.

Thanks for the help guys

The pug is hydraulic, and it sounds like Clutch Master Cylinder problem.

Have alook at your clutch pedal, see if it come away or broke from the master cylinder itself.

The 1.4 petrol definitely has a cable operated clutch, though the HDi might be hydraulic. OP's symptoms sounds very much like the self adjuster mechanism has failed, which is part of the cable. New cable is £20 or thereabouts.

I had this problem on my 1980 Spitfire, it was hydraulic-related. There was a soft bang and that was it, I couldn't disengage the clutch from the flywheel so couldn't get it in gear when the engine was running. If I put it in gear before the engine was started, it went in reverse or first gear.

I resealed and rebuilt the master cylinder and the clutch was much better, the slave cylinder was about to be done but I had an offer on the car so sold it on this premise as it was plagued with bodywork problems :(.

My 1.4 petrol 206 looks like it has a hydraulic clutch, so even if your fluid level appears to be good, you may have air coming in from the slave or master cylinder.

On the cable operated clutch, you could probably adjust it yourself, but if it's not this, it would be the clutch fork that has probably gone.

Many garages have become rich from clutch repairs, when it was a simple cable adjustment that was needed on the cable type.

Kind regards,

David

Ok, so saying its the cable.. how much should I expect for labor charge?

I've never had to fit one so I couldn't say. It's usually a fairly unpleasant job to do as you have to get upside down in the footwell but I wouldn't have thought it would take more than an hour.

A quick Google suggests this is a common problem:
