Hi, my bro got a very nice Peugeot 306 HDi at the weekend for only £3k with full warranty and what not. Had a drive of it at the weekend and it's actually a really good runner, quite a torquey thing with pretty sharp handling and judging by the 50 miles that have been put on it since he got it without the needle moving noticeably it seems like it should be pretty frugal.

He said that he thought there was some kind of chip/ecu remap available for it but was unsure if it actually existed and to what extent of performance improvement it would offer. Does anybody here know of such a thing and if it would be worth getting? He's going to be doing a fair few miles in it so if it's going to destroy the economy of it I think I'd suggest that he didn't, but it's always worth a look.

I have a 306HDi. Beware of the needle, it's one of those ones that takes sudden big jumps rather than small ones. Expect 400-600 miles to a tank depending on driving style and roads.

afaik the 306 HDI does not have an intercooler. You won't see any decent gains until you get one of those on there.

Also AFAIk the 406 HDI is the same engine but DOES have an intercooler, so thats a good place to start looking for once ;)

So he could nick a 406 2.0HDI intercooler and whack it in his 306? Is that much a job?

How dynamic are these remaps? If he were to get it remapped and then stuck an intercooler on it, would it be able to recognise the fact that the air is cooler and put out more power, or would it be fixed?

I've just seen one of these remap devices, but it sounds like you need to know what you're doing or you'll bugger it all up. How would you go about using somehting like this, would you need to have hold of the reprogrammed ECU on your PC already to be able to dump it on the car?

Allard Turbosport are well regarded for 306 tuning. Can't remember their web address but I'm sure google will find it.

You'll struggle to get a decent power increase without an intercooler - increasing the fuelling and/or boost levels without will cause your exhaust gas temps to soar which does not bode well for long term reliability. The 90's are actually worse on fuel than the 110's (in other cars where both were available) when driven hard which is again down to the lack of intercooler.

One thing to consider is the warranty, remapping and adding an intercooler will almost definetly invalidate it. Check with the place is was bought from to see where he would stand.

My mate had his S3 done through AMD and it was undetected, I would not take the risk though. On a TDI the remap just gives it a little boost when you start (nothing big), not really worth it imo.

cant u do a screw mod on this car?

No, that's the early 306s with the 1.9TD engine. The 110hp version of the engine (with intercooler) came in the Xsara and late Xantias, not sure about the Peugeots, so you might be able to source one that way. I do remember someone on a Xsara forum reporting he'd increased power and torque to 110hp and 180lb/ft from 90 and 155, cost ~£400.

Edit: Found the thread, site's pretty slow atm, http://www.xsarasportsclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2058

The fuel gauge on my Xsara can be pretty random, e.g. not moving until I've done 100 miles, and the needle position depends a lot on the angle the car is parked at.
