Peugeots, most hated cars?

I was walking round a car auction site yestereday and watched a couple checking out the cars on show. I had an 02 Reg 307 2.0l XSI in the sale and they had wondered over to see it. As the woman approached the car the husband grabbed her arm and pulled her away staying "...its a Peugeot". WTF? Its a nice clean car and not even worth a look in the windows?

So, what makes them so undesireable? Is it Pugs in general or specific models, a 307 in this case? They didn't even read the spec on the window, so they couldn't have known anything about it either.

They are terrible cars in every way , especially reliability wise. However recently albeit slowly they are starting to improve.
The competition is always better.

i'm guessing they were older, say 40s or so ?

people of that generation tend to have very strange views about cars that they dont like. For example my parents refuse to even go anywhere near any fords of any description, because when they last drove one 20 + years ago they "didnt like ford gearboxes"

Its that sort of irrational behaviour that leads to stuff like this.

You'll find a lot of people in 50s refuse to buy Skodas as well, again full or irrational rubbish about what they used to be, completely ignoring the point they are now owned by VW and nothing like the junk of the past.

My mum who is in her 40's is like this about skodas. :o

I've been looking at auctions recently, and havent been interested in 307s. 306s and 406s, yes but not the 307. Cars with poor reliability records plus auction isnt a good recipe!

A mixture of the general (lets face it slightly deserved) French reputation that all Gallic brands suffer from, and the fact that in recent times Peugeot have made some pretty bad cars relatively to their competition.

Personally I own a Renault and while given I paid so little for it, I think it was really good value, and I actually do enjoy driving it, I can fully understand why somebody looking at all the alternatives out there for 15k when it was new (I paid £3500 3 years later for it...) would get a generally bad impression. The same can be said for my car before that, a Citroen Xantia.

Until very recently, the French brands DID use substandard materials, screw things together badly and generally make shoddy electrics. The same as the Italians (arguably still do). I'm not sure why, it's almost certainly a cultural mentality in those countries.

Having said that, some of the best car designs ever have come out of France and Italy.

I would say it isn't specifically your car, more all French cars in general. Some people (mainly men who like German or Japanese cars), simply have a pre-programmed hatred of French cars as they think if they own one they will be ridiculed, or perhaps it'll simply explode as soon as they turn the key :)

Of course we know that isn't true, they might not be as well screwed together all the time, and they may suffer from more niggling faults, but it's very hard to buy a truly awful modern car, not in the way cars used to be awful.

Personally I quite like the fact that I can buy a 3 year old (albeit high mileage) well specified car that was around 15k new, for 3.5k! That probably doesn't help you though as you want to sell ;)

Because 307's are Crap & Pug dealers are a rip & owning a 307 you'll be visiting the stealers a Lot.

Massive generalisation but what the hey. :D

a friend got rid of his fiesta st because it was costing too much in petrol and he had a wedding to waste a ton of cash on.

he got a 1.6 diesel 307 or 308. spent four of the first six weeks of his ownership in the dealer due to horrendous noises in the front suspension and the car changing direction quite hard during braking.

they fobbed him off for ages then eventually offered him his money back and wouldnt say what they found wrong with it

My mum is currently looking to trade her 03 Fiesta in for a brand new Citroen C1

She loves the look of the car, I've warned her about electrics with French cars but how else can I make her change her mind & get something else??

Prolly won't be an issue tbh. They are mostly made by Toyota afaik, so she may find herself driving to places she doesn't want to (joke), but the electrics, mis-behaving or no, should be pretty solid ;)

As a previous owner of a 307 I can confirm they certainly aren't the greatest of cars.
Don't get me wrong, I owned it for 3yrs and it only went back to the dealership for services, nothing actually went wrong with it.
However it wasn't pleasent to drive, wasn't particular comfortable - basically there is better out there for your money.

However that experience hasn't put me off Peugeot - I'm sure I'd drive the right one again.

As for "badge haters" they annoy me so.
I own a Skoda Octavia vRS.
Thankfully most people my age and younger understand what i've got.
However when asked by an older person I've taken to just saying "Octavia vRS" and leaving them wondering what I've actually got.
Because I know if I mention the word Skoda "that look" will appear.

Personally I would never buy a French car. This is purely based purely on prejudiced views I hold on the French character.

When I was 17 all my friends had cars that had the same 1.4 engine (xsara, 306, saxo) and the number of headgaskets, gearboxes, leaks and clutches they went through was insane! The cars were only 6-7 years old at the time too!

I would consider a renault if it was something like a high spec Clio, but I won't ever buy a Pug or a Citroen.

I would own something German (inc. Seat and Skoda as they are owned by Germans), Jap or Ford I think.

Certain Peugeots = Good, general consensus = bad, or at least below average.

mglover, can't help feeling that was probably more due to lack of mechanical sympathy and new drivers more than anything else :p

My mum owned a 307 and it was poor. Hers basically went down the list of things likely to go wrong posted on the internet somewhere and spent most of it's time in a garage.
Still wouldn't like to trust anything the french have made, I'm sure they make a version for the english aside from the regular version. The ones they send to England look kind of the same but were put together backwards and designed to go wrong.
My mum and dad (50's) are the same with Skodas and "Datsuns" too. Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole even though they make some decent cars nowadays.

I owned a Peugeot 106 GTi for a couple of years. Great little car, loads of fun. And I never had anything go wrong with it.

Citroen, on the other hand, I would never go near again...

I don't like them if i'm honest, ridiculously ugly cars to my eyes.
A few bits of engineering, solid, a lot of it was complete rubbish up to the usual french standards.

The 206 I learned to drive in had 1 reedeming feature: the steering was, sort of alright-ish, everything else squeaked, was too heavy, light, jagged. The driving position was diabolical, most uncomfortable position imaginable. Changing into 5th or reverse you needed arms of steel, the clutch was so light you could barely feel it. It was horrible.

Lol. The thing I hate most about Peugeots are the accelerator being next to a lump of car. I cannot drive them due to my foot only being able to hit BOTH the brake and accel at the same time.

My lass wanted one of the 307CC until she sat in one.
