Hi folks

Girlfriend and I have been looking for a new car for ages that we both agree on, mainly comes down to the styling  We had agreed on a Golf but are finding them quite hard to come by at the moment. They also seem to hold their value quite well so not entirely sure we would be getting the full bang for our buck (as in a higher milage car still seems to go for quite a bit). Recently, the looks of the 307 have really grown on me and I was just wondering if anyone had any experience/opinions of them?

We would be looking to spend about £6k

TIA

Incredibly, 11 of the 12 most reliable cars are Japanese. At the other end of the scale, nine of the 11 models suffering from the most mechanical breakdowns are from French and Italian marques. And the most unreliable car on Britain's roads? You tell us it's the Peugeot 307.

Expect residuals to take a sudden hit :p

Avoid at all costs. Two people I work with have sold theirs because the reliability was so poor. Another chap ordered a new 307 diesel and had a was given a 1.6 petrol instead  The 307 was very low in a recent customer satisfaction survey I read so I doubt these are isolated problems.

no no no no nono no no and no. Pug 307 sucks reliability is terrible, pug really screwed up with replacing the 306 with the 307, ok the 307 is newer but it breaks down every 10 mins and pug dealers are as much use as **** on a fish.
so incase you didnt understand
NO

do NOT get 1.

i own one right now, its never broken down BUT the stereo went wrong first then clutch judder.

dealer said theres no clutch judder, we then experienced more clutch judder

they ended up replacing fly wheel, clutch and oil thats how wrong they were.

ride is ok and so are features

but get a focus or older civic you cant regret it

o and my 307 bought in december 04, it took dealer 7 months to admit there was something wrong with clutch

Agreed my friends mum has one, the whole electircs went they had the car for 6 WEEKS, when it came back you could not turn the heater dials all the way round, plus the 1.4 and 1.6 sucks ass and are slow and the handling is awful. So in conclusion

Avoid :D

hmmm I test drove one of these quite recently before getting my A2 and all I can say is

To start off with the car is very comfy however it is a pig to drive.

The clutch bite (on this model at least) was so high my whole foot was off of the floor.

The car is extremely heavy and so lumbers in and out of corners.

No idea about reliability I took it well about 500metres almost stalling in every gear the clutch was so bad and took it back white as a sheet (had a rather large lorry on the rear bumper so I was a bit nervous)

As above - there are far nicer cars around

I was so disappointed after the 306 - the 307 is not a drivers car in any sense of the imagination. I might even say it's probably even worse than the Mk4 Golf

Look at a Civic, Focus or Astra

I had one as a hire car (brand spanker) and I have to say I didn't like the over light steering and the windscreen seemed well in your face (steep rake).

Insides wasn't too bad - deffo not as well built as the MK4 golf I also drove.

I've heard many a bad thing about reliability.

In the end thats why I went for a focus - decent handling, not bad looking, not bad kit.

Also as I live in the Coventry area Pugs are worth 'not a lot' :)

I've got one, and it sucks frankly.

They (can) look quite nice, and are nice inside, but thats about it. I really can't think of any positive points about it.

Well I've been driving one for just over 18 months now and I love it.
Bought it as brand new on a 54 plate and haven't regretted the purchase one little bit.
I should mention at this point that I was fully aware of the apparent "reliability issues" that some people mentioned.
However these was nothing recent at the time to indicate these issues hadn't been solved so I went ahead with the purchase.

The look of the 307 is actually the first thing that drew me to it.
It does have a nice design to it, curves where there should be.
Inside things are quite plain, but you've got everything in there that you need.
Nothing squeaks, nothing rattles and nothing feels any cheaper inside then any other car in the same class.
No silly use of wood or fake wood which some manufacturers use.

To drive she is great.
A lovely smooth ride.
I'm driving the 1.6 petrol engine and there is plenty of acceleration when needed and even at those top-end speeds the car feels under your control and quiet.
Some may say uninspiring - however that isn't what you're buying the car for.

Reliability has been great.
She has been the subject of a manufacturers recall, however that was dealt with quickly and effeciently - I lost my car for a day while they fitted something to the suspension and it was all painless.
20,000 mile service intervals are great, just had my first 20,000 one and it sailed through without a single issue.

As with all cars you are going to hear about people who have had problems.
You name any car make/model and I'll find you a handful of people who will tell you all about the problems they had.
Take this thread down to only people who have owned one and you'll find that.
I love mine to bits, I've got another 18 months before it is paid off however I'll be in no hurry to replace it once I've had it 3 years.
Adopted by numerous police forces, European Car of the Year 2002 - numerous reasons why the 307 should be looked at.
However as it isn't a Focus or a Mondeo I expect it will be trashed by numerous people who've never even driven one, yet alone driven one daily.

i was going to post, but i may as well just frame this post instead.
a LOT of 306 owners were very irate when they "upgraded" to the newer 307.

I have a 2.0L 307 XSI (close to the top spec model)

And i would say don’t get one , in the first 6 months of ownership it was in the garage on average twice a month.
Its had the following done (I have owned the car for 7-8 months)

New Brake Callipers (2 front)
Ignition Problem
Accelerator Problem
Several Engine management problems
Its had the Hydraulic Tappets replaced (Big Job)

And a few other things i cant remember.

The 2Ltr is quite thirsty I get about 29mpg.. doing mainly country driving and some motorway/town. But if you are thrashing it i have had 26mpg from a tank.

The Seats on xsi model are very good , Performance is pretty good on this one to.

I would avoid the 1.4 and 1.6 Petrol engine the 1.6 Petrol engine is a nightmare to drive especially in the wet , the 1.4 has no power at all. On the 1.6 There is either no power or lots of power no middle ground so it makes for a very jerky ride , with no traction control allot of wheel spin.

2Ltr petrol doesn’t have this problem (Traction control and ESP), so if you are to get one. Get a 2Ltr petrol or a diesel.

The car is quite heavy but i find the 2.0L does the job fine pulls it out of corners pretty quickly. There is also no role problem on the 307`s well the Xsi model at least , if anything i would say the suspension is pretty solid.

Oh add New suspension bushes all round to my list of failures.
