Hi

I'm looking to upgrade my network from an aging n66u router. I need something to do some serious traffic shaping (qos).

I was looking the ubiquity edge routers or maybe going with a pfsense build. I have around 32 clients on my network.

Given that pfSense can be installed on a wide variety of hardware and that it's software solution with lots of plugins / tweaks I'd suggest it's overall the more capable solution but it really depends upon how far you're prepared to push configuration(s) and what hardware you have to hand; so I doubt anyone can give you a conclusive answer. Personally I'd go edgerouter myself (but then I have one and think its great, you may not).

Thanks for the replies guys. Either option would work for me. I have previously used openwrt extensively. I just want a versatile networking solution. The edge router looks like a great peice of kit. I have a lot of extra machines lying around. Mostly older and of the p4 or c2d variety. So not exactly low power. I just want to prioritise traffic. The router I have does the job but it pushes the hardware above and beyond the call of duty.

Andy,

It'd help if you answer questions :)

Edgerouter (maybe not the lite version to give some serious growth room). It can handle a lot of what you want to throw at it.

pfsense is an option as you can go really customer with the specs of the build but 32 clients with a bit of qos shouldn't need more than what an ER can do.

Not sure why this is even a question. You've got the parts and the know-how to do your own pfsense box, get tinkering! If it's a faff, buy a fancy router.

Yea thanks for your replies people. I think I will go down the pfsense box initially. The thing is... Is a p4 still a viable option?

It's routing stuff, it will be fine. I would only swap the hardware over for power consumption or noise reasons.
