PGR3 - Racing online with 2 players

Had a friend round tonight for a bit of gaming. We were going to have a blast at PGR3, but we couldn't seem to log into XboxLive. The console kept saying...

"You have too many gamer profiles active for the game mode you have chosen"

In the end we resorted to a 2 player game, but is there any reason why 2 profiles can't log onto XboxLive at the same time?
 
Awe that's a shame if it can't. We tried everything, putting profiles on different memory cards, logging in as one, then the other.

O well, 2 player only it is then :(
