Segabits apparently has this to say....

Oh shi-

So I’m watching Sega’s TGS live stream which currently is just playing trailers for their upcoming games while no press conference is going on. I was just happily playing it in the background as I catch up on some work while minding my own business.

Suddenly I head something that fills me with nostalgia and fond memories. Pioneer 2, Spread Needles, Rappys and beautiful Caves 3 come flooding back; It’s the main (vocal) theme of the original Phantasy Star Online! What the?

I quickly Alt-Tab to the stream and what do I see? Phantasy Star Online, the original, what is this? Then it shows PSOv2 and proceeds to go though each game in order of release right up to the very newest announced game, Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity. I’m excited about the game so I continued watching but that wasn’t all. Right at the end… My mind was blown.

I'm watching the live-stream right now (As of now, talking about Valkyria Chronicles 3 for the PSP). I haven't seen anything yet, but if this proves to be true, then holy hell, this year's TGS2010 has nostalgia written all over it for long-time fans of the original.

I do think the "2" in the picture looks like a bad photoshop though, so we'll have to wait and see.

EDIT - Dug around and found this. Hopefully the recorded video stays up. So it is true! 2011 and only for PC at the moment. Sega would be stupid not to do this for the consoles as well.

And for those wondering what was so special about the first game, well it was on the Dreamcast, and it was the first ever "Console Online RPG" i.e. think 3D Diablo-style game.

Original trailer for the first game for nostalgia purposes... (Love the first boss music used in this!)

Dam I loved Phantasy Star Online v1 and 2. I played Phantasy Star Universe for some time and it just felt like something like something was missing even though there was more content.

I hope it follows the same formula as the original, but modernized :) PSU was vastly underwhelming. As long as PSO2 retains the spirit of the first game, I will be all over it like a bad rash.

Interesting that it's PC only, and thus is considered off topic here...

PC only? I guess that could be a good thing as there will be less limitations on PC. Image PSO if toy could have 20+ doing runs instead of only 4 or 6.

WOw..hearing that music on the yuotube vid you linked.. gave me MAJOR flash backs :D I loved that game SO much.

Yeah even though it says to be for PC only, all we have right now is just the logo and barely any other information at all.

Like what the hell does this next game even look like? Will it still be the 4 player classic co-op or more? Will it even be a proper MMO game this time around?

I just hope more will be revealed by Sega as time goes by.

I know right.

Dragon boss appears (Literately drops in your face!), music plays, epic holy **** moment. I just love the synthesizer solo part.

And then if you played Episodes I & II, the V.R version Dragon boss is another huge moment.

I spent many hours and money (56k dial-up internet on my Dreamcast) on PSO v1 and v2, was just a fantastic game. The music and atmosphere were so absorbing. I'd love to see a PSO 2 (along with Shenmue 3 but that's a different story!)

I still have my saves and play them offline every now and again for nostalgia.

Yeah the synthesizer musical style is one of the best things about this game, and it stays quite similar and consistant all the way to the Universe series as well. I like how it was dynamic in the original and Episodes I & II, you have the calm peaceful one, and then changes over to the more intense version when you encounter monsters, and then back again, etc.

It was quite amazing how well this game ran on dial-up back then. Hell we Europeans got a crappy 33.6k (Somewhere along that lines) modem instead in our Dreamcast systems. Shame the Broadband adapter came out a little too late though, but it did make things a lot easier, especially if you were on one of those ancient free off-peak services back then.
