Hey guys,

I'm ripping my hair out over this as I can't get to the bottom of what's causing it. Setup is in the sig and when gaming I'm getting stupidly excessive CPU temps, like nearly in the 90c's which is slightly concerning!

I've already reseated the CPU with new Geild Extreme 2 thermal paste which has made absolutely no difference so I'm guessing this is going to come down to lack of airflow :(

The Noctua NH-D14 is setup as standard, to push through air using the standard 120mm fans directly into the 140mm exhaust. The rest of the setup is: 1x200 (front, intake), 1x140 (bottom, intake) and 1x200 (top, exhaust), all Phanteks fans.

I've tried reversing the top fan to feed into the case but no change in temperatures. The D14 is well up to the task of keeping things cool so I'm confused where to go next.

Would appreciate any thoughts or help on this :)

Try running with the front off, see if it drops temps, also you'd be better with 120 / 140 fans, the 200 is not really that good it does not give a good spread compared to two or 3 smaller fans.

Could the 2 x 290s be heating thing up?

Sure the fans on the D14 are pointing the same direction? (seen this before where a mate of mine put the middle fan on wrong. :p)

What's it like with the side panel off?

This may seem like a silly suggestion. But maybe check the bottom of the heat sink to ensure the plastic label isn't on there.

I actually stupidly left this on without realising after building my custom loop and booting into bios had extremely high temp. After checking it I realised how silly I was for forgetting this protective layer! Temp all good now.

What bioshock said...

You can't possibly be getting 90 from anything other than the plastic film still being on, or your cpu fan isn't actually spinning. Have you checked?
Going by your signature, remove the OC. Also go straight into bios to monitor the temp and fan speed. What's it say?
The only other thing is you've somehow assembled the cooler mechanism wrong and somehow it's not actually making contact. To check this clean off all the tim, add tiny spot. Tighten down cooler, then remove again, has the tim spread?

Good luck

Thanks for the replies and apologies for my lack of replies .. too much overindulgence birthday weekend celebrations :(

I am using the inbuilt fan hub and have been since I installed everything in the case. It's all powered up and working using the SATA power connector, and I can hear the fans spinning up based on the motherboard diode settings. Time to change that to maximum all the time!

Good call on the plastic film but that was one of the first things I took off :D It's an easy thing to do though. Got to admit I feel like a complete dunce as after all the years that I've been building machines, this has stumped me. When I redone the thermal paste on Saturday, the temps sat at 50 in the BIOS with the OC still applied. Didn't think to kill the OC whilst doing that :(

Thanks to you guys, I've got my list of things set to do when I get home from work today:

Strip the front 200mm fan and replace with 2x140mm Noiseblockers;
Reseat and recheck the DH14 to see if it is actually seated;
Check the fan setup on the DH14;
Double check
Remove the OC;
Set PWM on the motherboard to full speed all the time.

The 290s do definitely dump their heat into the case which compounds the issue.

Will report back later .. fingers crossed it is a dumb thing I've done (like fan orientation on the CPU) :)

Would you be able to temp install a fan between the cpu and gfx cards that blows to rear so all that hot air from cards is getting forced away from cpu cooler?
See if that makes a difference to temp.

Those 290s must be toasty !

Should be easy to achieve, as you can install either 120mm or 140mm fans on the back of the 3.5" drive bays.

Will do give that a shot as well. The 290s are toasty beasts but they never overheat or reach excessive temps, unlike the CPU. They're normally at around 68c when being fully stressed, so they're definitely getting the intake air :(

Right, so...

Got home and started work on the suggestions you've all made and whilst it now sounds like it's going to take off :o but it's working damn well .. a hell of a lot better!

Idle temps previously were 58c now at 27c in the BIOS;
Ingame temps were 80/90c now at 58c;

Just goes to show how absolutely fantastic that front fan is, at depriving components of fresh air! ;)

Thanks for all of your help chaps. The adage of bigger is better, isn't ways true :P Now, time to kill some rebel scum and put an advert of fleabay for that 200mm useless fan ;)

Wow that's quite a change, considering the Luxe was supposed to be quite good for airflow.

Are these results without the OC you had applied?

Totally took me by surprise to see it like that!

That's with the 4.6ghz OC applied, didn't try it without in the end. Should have but something told me to just go for it

One if the first things I did with mine was to replace the 200mm with 2x120mm.
I didn't rate the hub too highly either so a bay controller went in too.

The fan hubs are potluck and the 200mm fan is the first thing to dump, but at least it's easy to replace whith fans you prefer.
