Well the first 790X motherboards are hitting the shelves and I was wondering when the quad core AMD cpu's would be joining them?

Is there any date set for this and do any of the OCUK bods know what the expected price is going to be? I'd think that it would have to be pretty comparable to the Intel quads or they wouldn't sell.

Ive been seeing tomorrow around as a release date for Phenom.

Gibbo said they will be on the site soon.

are there any dual cores coming from AMD for poor people like me still stuck on an opty ?

There is already dual cores. If you mean with the revamped design then i doubt it. However there will be tri-cores.

Any idea on Phenoms performance? anything to get excited over?

Slightly slower than intel's per clock and don't clock all that well. There was rumours a few weeks ago that they had a new revision of the core out that was a nice step forward but we probably won't see that until next year. AMD's 65nm manufacturing seems to be pure trash which is probably what has been holding them back lately.

Is their performance anything to get excited over?

Not really - the CPUs coming out today (both Yorkfield and Phenom/Barcelona) don't really demonstrate any significant difference when gaming at anything above 1280x1028 assuming it's paired with a powerful graphics card. And no, clocking the proverbials off them does not impact on performance, either.

The key and pretty much only difference arrives with application-based performance, and there, it's pretty much split down the middle or 70:30 to Intel. The most pronounced differences crop up in things like SuperPi, but I personally would not buy a core system based around such benchmarks.

If you have an existing Opteron at 2.8GHz, upgrading - IMHO - to either chip is a bit silly if you're a gamer. Upgrade your graphics card, first. If you're a Core 2 Due user who can get their CPU to 3GHz, there is no point upgrading, either.

The biggest differences come in terms of power consumption. Both Phenom and Yorkfield use considerably less power than their predecessors.

my opty 170 is at 2.9GHz per core and i have an X1900XT 512 and this still isnt enough power to do what i want comfortably, namely supreme comander... and with games like that, its all on the CPU.

mmm so these could potentialy clock better then the Intels? Though it doesn't seem so. Id be tempted with getting this a 3x 3870s but most probably just for boasting rights haha.

so will a Phenom 9500 be faster than my 6000+? ive seen some benchmarks saying it is faster..

Yer its should be faster. Its only a little bit behind the Penryn.
The main decider for AMD in the enthusiasts area is clock ability.
For servers etc AMD is pretty covered.

Well written and considered post, which made me think. Too often we get carried away with the latest technology without stopping to think if it really makes much difference to what we do.

Besides much of the really new stuff is out of stock anyway ;)

I always telling people to save money on things like ram. They always like oo i need Pc 8500+ when you wont notice one bit of difference from 800mhz to 1250mhz.

Supreme Commander is to CPUs as Crysis is to graphics cards: a system could have the fastest hardware on the market today and, even overclocked, it's going to fall to its knees in a heap of scattered Powerpoint slides.
The difference between an Athlon X2 5600 and an Intel QX9650 is a enormous 2.9fps (call it 3 to shut the moaners up). Whilst the Intel will decimate the Athlon at Superpi, that benchmark clearly has no real bearing on its ability to churn out fps...
