Will a oc phenom 965 be powerful enough for gaming on the latest games?

I'm going to buy a £200 graphics card this week either a 570 or 660 mainly for borderlands 2 and battlefield and skyrim.

I can't really afford upgrading to an i5 but if the 965 isn't going to be good enough I will have to stretch my budget.

Yep they will be fine. I used a 955 with my 7970 for a short while and only really noticed sluggishness in skyrim, everything else worked great.

you will be fine with that.

The 570 isn't going to cause a bottleneck but if you were to go more powerful like 670 or sli 570 you would notice bottnecking then.

I doubt very much that he would 'notice' any bottleneck, but I would suggest that if he's going to buy a new card now then go for the 670. Even if it does present a bottleneck now it will mean that the graphics card will be a less likely candidate for upgrade in the near future - perhaps if the OP eventually does manage to do an upgrade soon. The 570 is old tech, and once the money is spent it can't be un-spent. The 670 is a wicked piece of kit and excellent value compare to the 680.

Thanks for advice guys,

Could you recommend the graphics card please I want nvidia for the fish eggs.

I will be buying the graphics card this weekend and was either going to get the new 660ti or the gtx 570 but can stretch my budget for a better graphics if need be.

I play in 1080p and like to have vsync turned on.

if you can find a 580 going cheap that would be a good shout, I wouldn't bother with a 570, but a 660ti may well be a good alternative depending on what prices they are available for

you will definitely bottleneck a 670, but then if you did get the 670 now you could try to sell the other bits in your PC and build a new rig when you have more cash

Sorry for the thread jack its just i have a very similar question,

I was wondering the same thing as the op i currently have a phenom 9850BE which is causing serious bottlenecking to my 7950oc which in a mates pc out performs a 7970Ghz edition at stock in my pc im getting anywhere from 10-30 fps less on the same bench tests or games what i was thinking of doing is get the phenom 2 965 and overclock it to 4Ghz+ for a cheap fix that will last until the next intel platform comes out if you guys think that would stop the bottlenecking ? if it won't i'll just go ahead and get a Asus maximus formula RoG + 3770k and oc it to 4.5-5Ghz i know that would stop it but at a much bigger cost ofc.

If you can get one for about £60 then I would suggest it, yes. The phenom ii outperforms the 9850 by a significant margin and would save having to buy a new mobo, RAM and CPU.

Get a 7850 and overclock it. Cheaper and more powerful than the above.

Hi,

I was wanting to try out nvidia fish eggs as I seen the YouTube videos with the smoke and it looks impressive and borderlands is a game I'm really looking forward to and if I didn't have the fish eggs I would feel like I'm missing out.

Also the gtx cards are giving away borderlands and that is a game I will be buying anyway so that saves me £20 straight away.

No idea what fish eggs is but ok...

You get 2 free games buying AMD cards too, could sell/trade for BL2. I'd personally go for the best hardware and that's 7850 for the £150-200 range. OCuK often have some cracking deals on custom 7850s.

This is the fish eggs and I don't think you get it on the 7850

The games that come with the 7850 like dirt showdown are pretty worthless I think thy only go for like £5 on eBay so they are not any good to me.

So for me the price is about the same and one has the fish eggs plus I heard the drivers updates are better on nvidia.

Those saying you won't notice a bottleneck are wrong, as depending on what game you play you will get noticeable FPS drops but not game breaking ones. Phenom II X4 is still fine for gaming, but games like World of Warcraft for example will run much smoother on Intel CPUs.

I think the only CPU heavy game I want to play is skyrim and right now I am playing it on a Athlon 455 4gh oc so and I find it ok so hopefully the phenom 965 oc should be more than enough to keep me happy.
