Hey folks, I was considering buying a whole new system but i've decided to just upgrade everything bar mobo/cpu/ram for now so im looking to try get a bit more performance from my Phenom II 940.

I'm using the following at the moment,

Biostar TA-790GX mobo
Phenom II 940 be
some terrible DDR2 ram

Am i wasting my time with this RAM? If not i'm just looking for some guidance as I don't really even know where to start :) It seems that my temps are a little hot too?

I have an Artic Freezer Pro 74 lying around i should probably wack that on? I have no thermal paste left I'll be buying some new when i order my other parts.

Thx

last time i put paste on was about 12 months ago, took a can't be assed style approach lol, i know it's terrible but i'm ordering some upgrades at the moment & that's on my list

well u probably need to re seat the heat sink as reiyushin said, with the temps that high you should do it asap. according to amd the max temp for the 940 is 62C...

it didn't seem to be seated incorrectly, however switched over to my Artic freezer pro and now it's the following:

Hows that?

edit: and btw, what a challenger sticking that cooler was lol! thought i would never get it on.

I think that's suitable considering theres no paste & my room is extremely hot, radiator beside the pc doesnt help =)

recon i'm good to start a bit of an OC then? I don't want huge performance i'll be happy with 3.3-3.4? no idea how these chips are, doing a bit of reading at the mo

edit: probably best to just wait for my thermal paste to arrive first?

if ur careful when overclocking that u keep an eye on the temps then i dont think it should be a problem, just do a 1 hour stress test now on stock and at each step u make in the overclock process

no thermal paste:eek: i'm running one of these, you should hit 3.4 with ease just upping the multi and vcore. i've had mine @3.6 ~58c on a xiggy s1284. i've since then got a coolit eco i'm going to see if i go a little further.

been just messing around with it slightly, runs well @ 3400, tried 3600 using 225 x 16 multi, BSOD's after about 15 minutes of 100% load could be well because of the voltage tho, i'm afraid to touch the volts just incase :D i'm not really sure how much to up it etc, still on standard 1.328v, i'm certain I need to up that ofcourse. just a quick question. can you damage the CPU by putting a relatively high fsb/multi on a low voltage?

it's up to you how you want to oc but as long as you stay within safe parameters, 62c for temp amd 1.5v max you will be fine.
