My PPD while folding seemed a little off so I sat and watched cpu-z for ten minutes or so and noticed that it keeps dropping the multi down to [4x] every every now and again.

I downloaded Tmonitor from CPUID to monitor clock speeds across the 4 cores and it seems that my multi is sitting at [15.5x] or [15x] most of time time however drops to [9x] frequently and occasionly down tp [4x]

Specs
AMD Phenom II 955
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo
4 Gb Geil value 1333mhz
8800GT
OCZ 400w PSU

Overclock settings

HT Ref: 250
CPU Multi: 16x
Vcore 1.45v
Mem Divider: 3/8

CnQ & C1E Disabled

Sounds like intel's SpeedStep... I forget what it's called with AMD processors but it stops the cpu running flat out to reduce temp at idle

confused me before I realised what it was too :)

Could be 'Cool'n'Quiet' which drops the cpu down as the previous op stated when not in use. You access this in the bios. Which I note you've disabled.

As I found out it could be the 'power profiles' if using windows 7. Setting it to 'balanced' in win 7 does the same as 'coolnquiet'. Try changing the power profile to performance.

I disabled collnquiet in the bios and just change between balanced and performance depending on what im doing.

Changing power plans doesnt make any difference, after a bios update it seems to have stopped it drop to 4x but Tmon is still showing a drop in multo

I disabled my cool and quiet as my Phenom II at 3.7GHz runs 25'c idle so never saw any need for it.

Hello frozennova :)

I had similar issue back in march this year and made a post about it in the AMD® Athlon™ II Overclocking Thread

Processor is at full 100% load in the above image . . .

hmmm im not sures it due to the vrms getting hot as mine have heatsinks and have a fan intaking air over them.

The throttling to 4x seems go have gone and cpuz is showing as my 16x multi but tmon is showing 19-19.5x

well if the ht clock is 250mhz, then cool n quiet shouldnt be working anyways.
I dont suppose it could be one of the many asus conceptions slap onto each board that has a similar effect to cnq?

hmmm im not sures it due to the vrms getting hot as mine have heatsinks
The heatsink may not be attached very well or still just getting very hot . . . Have you put your finger on the VRM heatsink to see if they are scorching or? . . .

and have a fan intaking air over them.
What do you mean? . . . there is a fan blowing air down on them or just a case fan extracting air a few inches above? . . . there may not be enough airflow . . .

Watercooled, maxes at around 53-55'c
If the CPU is Watercooled and your not using any fan at all blowing down on the CPU area then I'm 99% certain the problem is the PWM overheating . . if you read my post linked above its exactly the same as happened to me . . .

its an intake fan that blows over the top of the vrm heatsinks, ive got a good supply of 80mm fans and cable ties so I'll arm myself tomorrow and see if it yields any success
